Fender did it back in the day. Yes it will work but it will eventually wear though. Ive also had mixed results depending on the material the guard was made from. What has helped was wiping w/ "liquid sander/cleaner" (that is what the can says, got it at the Depot) its takes the gloss off the plastic thereby giving a better mechanical bond.
