7. Caleb Polleckfield Letton & Dorothy Tellere, merchant-farmer, constable in Ottery, St. Marys, Devonshire, England 1678-1700. CalebPolleckfield Letton (born 4/24/1678, died 8/4/1763) baptized in the Anglican Church at Ottery St. Mary, Devon England on 4/24/1678.  came to the Colonies (Maryland) as a regular soldier in the BritishArmy in 1700 and served until 1720 in Town of Saint Marys County and surrounding areas as policing units.  Married Grace Hartley Burton, (Born 4/30/1703 in Baltimore, Md, died 10/23/1791 Rockville Montgomery Co., Md). Married on 3/23/1723, Rock Creek Parish Church, Rockville, Md Grace was the daughter of Thomas Burton and Grace Hartley Burton.  Under conditions of plantation set out by Lord Baltimore, Caleb Letton acquired a warrant for 405 acres which he used to obtain a patent for survey, which was to be paid in annual payments, called rents, and had this land surveyed in 1722 and named it after his place of birth in England “Sutre” (also known as Ottary) in Prince George County, Maryland, now Montgomery County, Maryland, (Town of Rockville). In 1723 he patented an adjoining track of 67 acres, which he called, “St. May’s”.  The present town of Rockville, Maryland occupies all of this original tract. Caleb P. Letton/Litton, this spelling appears in his legal papers and wills, remarried in Maryland to Grace Hartley Burton.  Caleb’s will was probated on 5/12/1763 in Frederick County, MD because Frederick County had been formed out of the western part of Prince George’s County. A few years later this part of Frederick County was formed into Montgomery County. The Letton records are found in the Rockville Courthouse.  Children

8. John Richard Letton and  Sarah Ann Wilcoxen (John born 7/4/1726, died 1/3/1804) born in England or Rockville Maryland, died in Elk Garden, Russel Co. VA. Buried in Litton Cemetery, Russel Co., VA.  Married Sarah Ann Wilcoxen (born 2/29/1728 in Rockville, Montgomery Co., MD Died 1/13/1808 in Elk Garden, Russell Co., VA. Married on 5/3/1745 in Fincastle , Augusta Co., VA. Sarah Ann was the daughter of John and Millacent Wilcoxen. Children.  John was a barrister and jurer. From 1771-1773 john Richard Letton is often found as a jurer in Botetout Co., VA (Annals of Southwestern Virginia by Lewis Preston Summers).  John Richard Letton is mentioned as one of the militiamen under Summers and Caleb is listed under Selby on page 200 of Katherine Keogh White’s book “The King’s Mountain Men”.  Information at Washington Historical Society says that the John Litton listed as a mulitiaman at the Battle of King’s Mountain in 1781, is John Richard Litton father of Solomon.

James b 1750 m Mary Ann Castle At a court held for Washington Co., VA 3/20/1781 is an order: “On motion of James Litton (brother of Solomon) and James Laughlin, and by consent and order of the Court they appointed guardians of the estates of Captain John Dunkin and Solomon Litton, prisoners of the enemy in Canada, and to use all legal methods for saving and securing the said estates, whereupon they, together with William Davidson and John Vance entered into and acknowledge their bonds for eight thousand pounds for the faithful performance of the same.”

  E. Solomon Caleb b 1751 d 1844, m Martha Duncan Served in the Revoluntionary war and Dunmores War of Fincastle Militia.  Commissioned and Ensign of Militia, Washington Co., 2/26/1777; promoted to 2nd. Lt. In revolutionary War, fought British and Indians, captured by Britich at Ruddles Fort and Martin’s Station in June 1780, (near present Paris KY.), taken to Fort Quebec, Canada and held until 1783. Note of interest: Solomon Litton is often listed as a militiaman at The Battle of King’s Mountain, which took place in October 1781. This was not possible, because Solomon was captured in June of 1780 and released in 1783, also it could not have been Solomon Jr. as he was not born until 1783. The reason for the error may be that Solomon was formerly a member of the Washington Co., VA Regement which participated in the King’s Mountain Battle so historians presumed he was there. (C. DeBissi)  Solomon Letten is recorded in the old “Certificate Book” or “Doomsday Book of the Conquest of Kentucky” as having made an actual settlement 3/1779 on 400 acres on the “Midle Fork of Coopers Run above Francis Berry’s Claim” in KY. F. Burton C. b 1753 d 1778 m Elazabeth Laughlin Burton Litton seved in Dunmores War as a Private in 1774 (list of Colonial Soldiers of VA, DW396) under Captain Daniel Smith of the Fincastle militia.  Other documents show that Burton Litton was called as a volunteer ranger in this same militia many times to defend and protect his neighbors from Indian raids along the  Clinch. He was friends with Daniel Boone and Issac Crabtree.  Hi is intered in an unmarked grave at Fort Elk Garden Church..  An account of his death is in the National Archives, Washington D. C.. It is described in the pension statement of his old friend and fellow Patriot, Isaac Crabtree, dated 9/27/1832. He states that Col. Daniel Smith came to the Fort, taking ten men, among them was Burton Litton and William Preist, they were in front (scouts) when they were met by the Indians. The Indians lay in ambush in two sing holes on each side of the Trace, where they raised and put themselves ina fighting attitude and fired on them.  When the fighting  commenced, Col Smith and the balcance of the men turned and ran. He, Litton and Preist held their ground until the Indians were within thirth or forty yards of them and the balls flying around them like hailstones from a thunder storm.  He began to think it was time to take care of himself, seeing by time the whole of the company had taken flight and left them.  He retreated a short distance and was closely pursued by the enemy and he wheeled to see how near they were to him and saw one within thirty yards. He immediately raised his gun and taking aim, fired into his breast.  The Indian fell back and uttered some coarse loud noises. He overtook the company and tried to rally them without effect. They continued their retreat and two of the men were killed along side of him.  They were the two men who went in fron with himself, Burton Litton and William Preist.

G. Nancy b 1755 d 1807 m Thomas Brown 11/6/1795. Thomas was b 6/28/1773 d 1867. They were married in Tinkers Creek, Botetcourt Co., VA.  Documented evidence of Thomas and Nancy is the filing of their marriage bonds at the Fincastle Courthouse, Botetourte County VA. On 11/5/1795, both signed with an “X”. Nancy Litton & Thomas Brown 11/6/1795 b- John Dollard. Nancy gives own consent 12/4/1795 John Dollard who test. Age of bride as over 21. There is strong evidence that Nancy’s home was in the Tinker Creek Area of Botetourte County. There is the possibility that Thomas came from the Beaver Dame Creek Area of adjoining Bedford County VA.  The couple migrated to Jackson County after the birth of Dudley in December 1799, but before the birth of Henderson in May 1802. Their land was along the Dry Fork of Flynn’s Creek. How Thomas acquired this land is unknown but Caroline DeBiase did find a Thomas Brown was granted Army Lands from the Virginia Military District in 1801, (page 11). Since Thomas would have been too young to have served in the Revolutionary War, any grant originating from service in the Continental Army would have been passed to him from his father, or uncle, etc.  Thomas did serve in the war of 1812, but by that time he was well established in Jackson County.  Thomas Brown’s farm was 8 miles from Gainesboro, TN, west on Highway 53 to Fork of Creek School House, then left and up Dry Fork of Flynn’s Creek 14 miles.  In 1936 Sid Ragland occupied this farm (Tennessee land archives, 5/5/1801)
