Moria (PD)

Last modified on July 2nd, 2005

Moria is an early public domain dungeon exploration game. It exists in multiple forms with some differing features. The Amiga version, as well as others for all I know, have the nasty feature of scratching your saved game when you restart from it. It is particularly not nice when you've just been killed deep in the bowels of the dungeon and find you have to start all over!

But never fear, there is a way, albeit manual. After you've saved and quit the game, use your favorite directory manipulation program to access the Moria directory. Copy the file: moria.sav to another directory. You may wish to save multiple save files. If so rename moria.sav to something like moria.sav001, and the next to moria.sav002, etc. After your character dies and you want to restart, copy the saved file of choice back into the Moria directory and rename it to moria.sav if you had renamed it to something else when you made your backup copy. You'll now be able to restart your game from where you were when you last started.
