Welcome to the North Texas Whippet Racing pages! Whippets are a medium sized dogs classified as sighthounds. Sighthounds hunt by sight, running down their prey like the greyhounds. In whippet racing, their prey is a drag lure. Our dogs race against one another for points. With enough points the dogs earn titles. The whippets have to be registered with the AKC and with the various racing organizations in order to compete. The rules for the various Associations can be found below at their corresponding websites. The whippets have to be in tiptop condition to run successfully and safely. Some club members travel all over the United States so that their whippets can compete against other whippets. Members of other whippet clubs come here to race and visit. We do this for the enjoyment of our hounds and ourselves. The dogs love the running and don't care if they win points. We love to see the dogs run. The visiting is icing on the cake. We do our racing at Celina Downs, a wonderful facility owned by Don and Barbara Koch. Two separate clubs host events at Celina Downs, the Whippet Appreciation Society in Texas (WASIT) and the North Texas Whippet Club (NTWC). Straight track racing is sanctioned by the Whippet Racing Association (WRA), and the North American Whippet Racing Association (NAWRA). Oval track racing is sanctioned by the National Oval Track Racing Association (NOTRA). Practices are held year round and are absolutely free for anyone who wants their whippets to give it a try!!
