What I've Been Up To...
Born in Oklahoma City in 1960, for which I can accept no personal responsibility.
Attended Putnam
City Schools (graduated PCHS 1978), Oklahoma City University
(BA/Humanities 1981), the School for International Training in
Brattleboro, VT
(MA/Teaching
English to Speakers of Other Languages, 1991), and the University
of Oklahoma (Master's in Social Work, 2006). Let us pause now to
recall the words of Thoreau: "Men say they know many things; / But
lo! they have taken wings-- / The arts and sciences / And a thousand
appliances; / The wind that blows / Is all that anybody knows."
Peace Corps volunteer in northeastern Thailand (1982-1986). My gratitude goes to the taxpayers for their subsidy of this formative experience.
English teacher in Thailand (1982-1986, 1991-1995) including secondary schools in Maha Sarakham, Roi-Et, and Ubon; Teachers Training College in Ubon and Maha Sarakham; regional teacher training in Region 10; Rajabhat Institute (now University) in Chachoengsao, Phanat Nikom Refugee Camp in Chonburi. So many delightful students watched me stumble along.
Public School ESL teacher in Los Angeles, CA (Poly High School, 1987-1991) and Oklahoma City, OK (Northeast High School, Jefferson Middle School, Hoover Middle School, 1995-1999). Then came burnout, identity crisis, career change...Music swells.
Social services worker in Oklahoma City, 1995-present (Lutheran Social Services, Travelers Aid Homeless Family Outreach Services, Oklahoma Department of Human Services, Catholic Charities, North Care Community Mental Health Center, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center - HIV clinic).
Human rights advocate active to varying degrees at different times in Amnesty International, Oklahoma Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty, Oklahoma County Green Party and the ACLU of Oklahoma. Currently not active in any of these groups. Oh well.
