HAIR 2001-2002 in VIENNA!!

PRODUCTION NOTES AND INFO:

Dagmar and Kim meeting in Vienna

Director/choreographer Kim Duddy (center), who was born in Ohio and came to Vienna in 1987 for "CATS",
assistant director/choreographer Brian Carmack, who was three when HAIR first opened on Broadway,
and I met at the Theater Café in Vienna, on January 16th, 2001,
to look at some of my HAIR memorabilia, notes, clippings and photos.

The new poster is proof of the different approach to HAIR:
today a sign of "otherness" is not long hair, but a bald head.
And this is the moment, when I must confess
- and I NEVER thought I would ever utter these words --
"I AM OLDFASHIONED",
BUT: I LIKE HAIR!!! I really really do.
"Darling, give me a head with hair, long beautiful hair,
Shining, gleaming, streaming, flaxen, waxen,
give me down to there hair, shoulder length and longer..."
in the words of Gerry Ragni and James Rado,
set to music by Galt MacDermot in 1967, so long ago.. and yet so timeless!

This "HAIR for the 21st Century" was an experiment of sorts:
the actors talked in German, with a few English words thrown in for good measure
- actually speaking 'Denglish' as most of us do naturally these days -
and the songs were sung in the original English versions!

It worked and the show was a hit. It was sad to see the end of the run coming up so fast.

BUT there are photos (and I WILL put some of them up for you!) and memories,
and a whole bunch of kids, who saw HAIR for the first time in Vienna
and became fans, never having seen the original - because they were not yet born.
IMAGINE!

The first performance, a fabulous Opening Night, was celebrated on March 10th, 2001,
the last performance, on June 30th, 2002, arrived much too soon...

If you'd like to see what they are now up to, go see the ever-changing pages of Vereinigte Bühnen Wien.

See you in Vienna!! Auf Wiedersehen in Wien!
