SS100T
Computerized Sideslip Tester for Heavy Duty Vehicles

60 Second Alignment Check

Hunter's SS100T measures sideslip, or tire scuff, on heavy duty vehicles -- an indication of incorrect toe settings on steer axles and of excessive tandem scrub angles on tandem or multi-axle vehicles. Sideslip can also be caused by other mechanical problems.

The SS100T utilizes microprocessor-based digital electronics to achieve test repeatability within ± five feet per mile (or one meter per kilometer).

The system tests tandem-axle tractors; tractors and semi-trailers; tractor, semi-, full-trailer combinations; multi-axle vehicles; buses; and 2-axle vehicles, including passenger cars.

Results are instantly displayed

As each axle is tested, results are displayed on the console's fluorescent backlit panel in 4" (101 mm) tall numbers. Flashing color bars indicate "Pass/Marginal/Fail". The system automatically prints out a hard copy of the test results for working reference or permanent record.

How does sideslip relate to toe?

Toe is the horizontal angle of a wheel to the thrustline of a vehicle. With toe-in, the front of the tire is closer to the thrustline; with toe-out, the opposite is true. Sideslip is affected by the vehicle's toe-in or toe-out setting and is measured as the number of feet (or meters) a tire is scuffed sideways for every mile (or kilometer) driven.

Single plate system assures the most accurate and consistent readings.

During extensive comparative testing of single plate and two plate systems, the SS100T's single plate has proven superior in accuracy and repeatability. As the vehicle is driven over the plate, a toe condition will be detected as the measuring plate is "pushed" by the opposite wheel (the wheel still on a solid surface). This sideslip is sensed by an optical encoder and digitally relayed to the system's computer.

How sideslip relates to scrub angle.

Tandem scrub angle is the angle formed by the intersection of horizontal centerlines drawn through each rear axle. A misaligned tandem axle causes all wheels on the tandem to scrub. The vehicle tends to follow the direction of the scrub angle. The steering angle must be turned to offset the "push" of the tandem axles and keep the vehicle moving in a straight line. This causes every tire on the vehicle to scrub.
