Hunting Season Herping, 2003-4

Every year during deer hunting season, we often get warm weather and find herps throughout the season.  Here are a few we found this year:

Nov 1-2 - Opening Weekend, Bannister WMA, San Augustine County, TX

We found the usual Pineywoods lizards (Anolis, Scincella, and Eumeces fasciatus) along with a subadult Copperhead that had a grotesquely swolen left eye.

November 13-16, I went to the Guadalupe Mountains in southern New Mexico to hunt Mule Deer.  On the 13th, I found 2 DOR Salvadora grahamiae up in the mountains near Queen.  On the 16th (on the way home), I found 2 DOR Pituophis in Eddy County, 1 Crotalus viridis AOR in Lea County, NM,  1 Crotalus viridis AOR in Andrews County, TX, and 1 DOR Masticophis flagellum in Howard County, TX.

November 22-23, we hunted Goldmine Canyon Ranch in Val Verde County.  On the way into Loma Alta to get ice for Marla's deer, I found 2 AOR Thamnophis cyrtopsis and a DOR Masticophis flagellum.  On the way out on the 23rd, we found a DOR Salvadora grahamiae.

December 7th, on the way out from Goldmine Canyon, we found an AOR Salvadora grahamiae.

January 1-3, Marla & I again went to Bannister WMA for a late season hog/squirrel hunt.  We found a variety of frogs (Pseudacris triseriata, P. crucifer, Rana clamitans, and Bufo woodhousei), 1 Ambystoma maculatum, the usual lizards (Anolis carolinensis and Scincella lateralis), and a Cottonmouth and a Texas Ratsnake.
