1998-1999 Season

In 1998, we again hunted Bannister WMA in east Texas.  It rained a lot the first two weekends of the season, and I only saw 1 deer all year!

Marla hunted with my Dad on his deer lease at Mason, and shot a doe.

1999-2000 Season

In 1999, I again hunted Bannister WMA east of Lufkin.  I went pretty much every weekend, and saw deer every weekend as well.  I had a stand along a stream in the deadfall area of the Turkey Hill Wilderness not far from where I shot the buck in 1997.  I saw basically the same 3 does every weekend.  One weekend, I did have a buck come through, but he never left the dense brush and I couldn't see enough to tell even what he looked like, much less get a shot.  Marla did see a nice mature buck the weekend before Thanksgiving.  She had come down from her stand and walked back to the car and emptied her gun.  When she looked up, a big buck and a doe were standing in the woods not 100 yards away - but they had already spotted her and ran off before she could get a shot.

Thanksgiving weekend, I hunted for a doe at my Uncle Kent's deer lease, and missed a long shot at one.  Marla hunted at my Dad's Mason lease again, and shot a doe and a spike.

I tried hunting this buck later in the season, but saw only more does. My brother did shoot a very large feral hog in the area over Xmas.
