This group of snakes contain some of
the absolute best beginner snakes, and most forms are notable for their
ease of maintenance in captivity (there are some exceptions). Most
are hardy and readily feed on frozen and thawed pre-killed
rodents. While not as uniformly colorful as a group as the
kingsnakes, the ratsnakes do contain some of the most stunning species
of all serpents. Click on the thumbnails below for larger images.

| Cornsnakes
- We have several localities of
and morphs in our breeding colony (as well as in my Dad's), notably,
Apalachicola National Forest, Florida and southern Appalachians
animals. We also have a pair of amelanistic and het for
amelanistic. Finally, we have a wild-collected female that may be
genetically piebald, but we have yet to confirm this with breeding
results.
normals & amels - $25 each, 10
lots for $100, 25 lots for 200, and 50 lots for $375

Thornscrub Ratsnakes - no
good common name exists for these ratsnake - "Southern Plains
Ratsnake" is inadequate, and their latin name is a mouthful (Elaphe
guttata meahllmorum). They are a large, robust form of the
Cornsnake found in the Tamaulipan thornscrub province of South Texas,
hence the name I use.

Baird's Ratsnakes - An
underappreciated ratsnake from the Trans-Pecos region of Texas as well
as points south of the US border, these are one of the few species which
continue to get better-looking as they mature. We produce Val
Verde County and Davis Mts locale bred animals, and some mixed locale
stock. These are foolproof feeders.

Texas Ratsnakes - these
snakes have a well-deserved reputation for their aggressive tendencies,
although with handling, a captive-born individual can learn to relax (I
have a large captive-born leucistic that I use in the classroom) and not
bite. We have a wild-caught amelanistic male that was caught in
Mesquite, TX in 2002, and a variety of wild females to breed him to.
hets - $25, amels - $100 |

Gray Ratsnakes - these
beautiful snakes are slightly less aggressive than their western
relatives, the Texas Ratsnakes, but they too often require handling in
order for them to learn to relax. We are working with both
"white oak" snakes, as well as a wild-caught amelanistic
strain.

Cave-dwelling Ratsnakes - these
large, slightly high-strung ratsnakes are among the most beautiful
species in the group. They are native of Malaysia, and our
specimens originate from a high-elevation population there. Unlike
most ridleyi, our maintain their yellow coloration as
adults. They get very large - our adult male is in excess of 7
feet long. As hatchlings, they have a tendency to prefer live
mice.

Leopard Ratsnakes - these
are a smaller species of ratsnake originating from eastern Europe.
They are hardy adults, and their care requirements are similar to a
kingsnake or cornsnake. As hatchlings, they prefer live mice, and
it sometimes some effort is required to get them feeding on
frozen/thawed. These come in a blotched and a striped form - our
pair are blotched.
