Hear a Satellite signal on your Scanner!

Many people think it takes expensive equipment and super large dish antennas to hear satellites. This might be true for some, but not all! Many of the Ham Radio satellites can be copied on either your everyday scanner with the stock antenna or on your HF receiver with a dipole. A good source for Ham Radio satellite information is Orbitessera which is a website with freqs of many of the orbiting Ham Sats.

But on August 31, 2001 there will be a new bird in the sky. This new bird is the Starshine Satellite. Scheduled for launch on August 31, 2001 at 5PM AKDT (0100 GMT) from Kodiak Alaska Launch Complex. The Starshine satellite will contain a beacon which will be transmitting on the 2 meter ham band. Any scanner capabile of receiving 2 meter frequencies should be able to pick up this satellite as it orbits mother earth. The Starshine satellite will be operating on frequency 145.825 MHz.

For more detailed information on how you can track this satellite as well as view it with the naked eye you can go to the Starshine Web Site.
