The RadiosOnLine/TopSecretBooks Listening Post.

Since I've started the RadioOnLine website many people have asked me about my equipment and how I got started. I've started monitoring back in 1976 with some old multi-band radio I bought from a SEARS department store. I bought the radio because I wanted something that could receive aircraft, but to my suprise the first night I had the radio I heard Radio Moscow! The next day in high school (Northern Bedford County High School in Loysburg, PA) I just had to go to the library and start reading about SWL! Over the years I've bought and sold many different radios. Below you'll find a picture of what my shack looked like in 2000 while living in Lancaster, PA. In May of 2001 I moved from Lancaster, PA to Daytona Beach, FL! Best move of my life, the people in Lancaster simply SUCK!

Equipment List - 2000 Lancaster, PA
  • HF Receivers
  • ICOM R71A
  • JRC NRD-535
  • Kenwood TS-520
  • VHF / UHF Receivers
  • Radio Shack PRO-2006
  • Radio Shack PRO-2035
  • Radio Shack PRO-94
  • Radio Shack PRO-26 (not in photo)
  • Antennas
  • 40 Meter Dipole (indoors)
  • 20 Meter Dipole (indoors)
  • 50' LongWire (1)
  • Radio Shack Discone (indoors)
  • MFJ-1020B Active Antenna (2)

(1) 50' Longwire goes out second story window, to a tree 30' away. Then down the trunk of the tree where I attached the end of the wire to a long fence (non-electric!). I really don't know the length of the fence other than very long, but only about 4' off the ground. This setup does offer slightly weaker signal strengh than my other antennas, however the noise pickedup by the wire is ALOT less then my others. This is because my other antennas are indoors. On the wire I can copy signals that I can't on my indoor antennas!
(2) The MFJ-1020B antenna acts as a great pre-amp and pre-selector for my longwire and dipoles. Sometimes it gets used as a "true" indoor active antenna on the ICOM when I'm listening to a station on the JRC but want to monitor an HF Utility freq on the ICOM.

Thats it, nothing real fancy but does the job and provides for hours of fun!
