The Bluebonnet Council of American Youth Hostels was established in 1986 as part of an effort by the National AYH organization to encourage hostelling in the South. The Bluebonnet Council was assigned the territory on the Gulf Coast from Louisiana to Corpus Christi, Texas, as well as inland areas including College Station and Waco.
The purpose of the Bluebonnet Council is to develop hostels in this area and to promote hostelling among the residents of this region. At the same time the Bluebonnet Council was established, two other councils were also formed in Texas --- the North Texas Council, based in Dallas, and the Southwest Texas Council, based in Austin. Together, these three councils formed the Texas District of AYH.
