One of my students, Katie G., had an assignment in school to write a persuasive essay. I did a little persuading myself, and she gave me permission to share it with you. I hope you have as much fun with it as I did.

Kids Should Not Have to Take Piano
by Katie G.

It is a well-known fact that kids hate doing things they don't like. Of course kids can dislike many things, but one thing is for sure, most kids that take piano, do not and I repeat, do not like it. And with all the complaining, I am sure parents get tired of it as well. So why, when it takes up too much time, costs way too much and is absolutely no fun whatsoever, do parents and their innocent children take piano!?

It's hard these days to find a kid with an empty schedule. Face it, things have changed from the 50's and 60's. Nowadays there are lots of extra curricular activities, and let me tell ya, piano is at the bottom of the list. Why should kids waste their precious time on piano when nothing is accomplished. Parents should not have to waste their time driving back and forth, when all you hear from your child is complaints about the unliked, so-called art. So please don't waste your time on piano!

Now for the money issue. If your family is of the millions that have been wrapped around a tricky piano teacher's finger, you better escape, and fast! Those tricky teachers are always charging for unnecessary items. Books, sheet music, extra lessons, theory testing, the list could go on. But the fact is kids could care less about this. The money issue is definitely the parents' issue! So parents-do yourself and your check book a favor, stay out of piano!

The next issue can be said very simply, piano is no fun!! All you do is sit there. You have to practice and memorize and even study! It is just like doing homework, which most kids prefer over piano. Piano teachers don't make what they love interesting to anyone else. Most new piano students think what they are getting into is going to be fun, but boy, are they misinformed!

In conclusion, I hope you have all learned that piano is a waste of time, money and is absolutely no fun. Please don't get caught in the trap call piano, it is for your own good! Please also keep in mind that this was done from a kid's point of view, and was not meant to offend any piano teachers!!

NOTE: I would like to add that none of this has anything to do with my beloved piano teacher, Mrs. Bobbie Badger. She treats me like her very own grandchild! And I love HER!

Editor's comment: By the way, Katie received an "A" for her grade! (although her teacher commented that she totally disagreed).
