Introduction to the Original Audiophile Discography

Below you will find what I believe to be a complete discography of the releases on Ewing D. Nunn’s original Audiophile label. Possibly incomplete items are shown in red and consist of AP-74, 79 and 123. I can find no evidence that these items were ever issued. I would be happy to make additions or corrections. You can find my e-mail link at the top of my home page. These records are no longer available except as used collector’s market items. They can sometimes be found on eBay or other internet sites. Prices vary.

Ewing D. Nunn’s original Audiophile records were made of red vinyl, and the sides were always labeled “A” and “B”. They carried a Saukville or Mequon, Wisconsin address on BOTH the label and the jacket. The logo on the records was the word Audiophile with the leading side of the ‘h’ in the form of a musical note. The bottom of the note was centered on the hole in the middle of the label.

I list AP-125 as the last of the original Audiophile discs. AP-126 was recorded in 1977, the year of Ewing Nunn’s death, and carries the notation that it was recorded by Tom Loy.

Reissues and new issues by subsequent owners of the label are on black vinyl and carry various other addresses and logos. They may be labeled “side 1” and “side 2”. Ewing D. Nunn appears to have used the AP-4, AP-26 and AP-29 numbers on two different releases, as shown below. Subsequent owners have reused many AP numbers.

Some of the material from the original Audiophile master tapes is now available on Compact Disc.

AP-57 > AST-504

AP-59 > AST-505

Issues and Reissues on Other Labels

*** Several Audiophile recordings of the Jim Cullum Jazz Band were also issued on the American Jazz label, with the same numbering but an AJ prefix. AJ-119, AJ-122, AJ-124 and AJ-125 are known to exist and to correspond to the Audiophile discs with the same numbers. The content of AP-123 is based on known copies of AJ-123. We have been unable to locate a copy of AP-123, and it is not clear that it was ever issued.

Some Audiophile recordings were also released on the Concert-Disc label, and on reel to reel tape on the Stereophony label, by arrangement with Ewing Nunn. Concert-Disc was located in Wilmette, Illinois. Here are some AP numbers and the Concert-Disc numbers that appear to correspond to them (M-10xx indicates monaural; CS-xx indicates stereo or electronically simulated stereo):

AP-7 and AP-8 >M1053 > CS-53

AP-20 > CS-44

AP-24 > M-1055/CS-55

AP-54 > M-1050/CS-50

AP-56 > CS-48

AP-57 > M-1047/CS-47

AP-62 > CS-52

AP-63 > M-1049/CS-49 > 4T-4017 (Concertape)

AP-69 > M-1051/CS-51 > 4T-3026 (Concertape)

AP-73 > M-1054/CS-54

The titles and other details may differ. Ewing Nunn also authorized the release of AP-78 as EKL-240 on the Electra label.

AP-66 was released as AAPJ 019 on the Analogue Productions label. AP-94 was released as HHZ-94 by H.H. Zeno Productions of Littleton, Colorado. AP-80 appears to have been reissued as Athena ALSS 10005, based on the album title. The arrangements for these releases were made with subsequent owners of the Audiophile label.

Monophonic or Stereo?

It appears that the earliest Audiophile record to be available in a stereo version was AP-54. Previous albums were issued in monophonic form only, as were various subsequent albums, especially if they involved a single instrument. It is not always clear from the labeling that a particular disc is monophonic or stereo. Albums with an APS-xx, APS-59xx or STEREO xx number are stereo issues of monophonic discs by the same number (AP-xx). AP-110, released in 1971, is a stereo version of AP-70, which was recorded much earlier.

According to Don Gibson, AP-66 was taped in both monophonic and stereo simultaneously, using two separate recorders. Perhaps this was the norm for the discs that appeared in both monophonic and stereo. I have found no information about how Ewing Nunn arranged the microphones for these sessions, but it would seem likely that he used separate microphones for the monophonic and stereo recordings, based on his disdain for any kind of mixers.

Who Did Ewing Nunn Record Most Often?

Doc Evans              17 discs

Knocky Parker       16 discs

Robert Noehren      11 discs

Jim Cullum, Sr.       10 discs  (AP-118 and AP-119 were recorded by Fred Moldenhauer)

Harry Blons              5 discs

Red Nichols, Red Dougherty, CSO Winds, Jim Cullum, Jr.: 4 discs each

Queen City Jazz, St. Louis Ragtimers, Earl Hines:                3 discs each

CSO Brass, Rosy McHargue, Margaret Barthel, Salt City Jazz Band, Mother’s Boys: 2 discs each

If you count the discs Knocky Parker recorded as part of the Doc Evans band and with Marvin Montgomery, his total tops the list. And Harry Blons was also part of the Doc Evans band and two other groups.

It contains one track from the original session not issued on the LP – Coal Black Shine. It also contains three

tracks not recorded by Ewing Nunn – Sweethearts on Parade, Sensation Rag, and Shimme_Sha_Wabble.

They were recorded at The Playhouse in Mount Gretna, Pennsylvania on June 26, 1981 by WITF-FM.

It seems that we have reached the end of an era. The Jazzology releases of BCD-361/362, JCD-86, JCD-331 and JCD-363 were from Audiophile LP discs rather than from Ewing Nunn's original master tapes. Results have varied, but the release of AP-95 on JCD-363 is awful, with a continuous growling sound that is not present on the LP. It seems likely that the remaining master tapes have deteriorated to the point that they are not useable, and that future releases will be from LP. What a pity.

Availability of Audiophile Material in Library Collections

In developing this discography, I made use of the resources of the Stanford Archive of Recorded Sound. The Stanford Archive has about 40 Audiophile records and record jackets. They also have an extensive collection of discographies. These resources were valuable sources of information for my Audiophile catalog.  Larry Forbes has donated 20 discs to the Stanford Archive, and Jay Tonkinson has donated a copy of AP-1. Stanford has not cataloged any of their Audiophile discs.

WFMT, the Smithsonian, the Library of Congress, the New York Public Library and the Chicago Public Library each have a few Audiophile discs.

The Mills Music Library at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has a collection of Wisconsin labels that includes 40 Audiophile discs, plus 3 Audiophile catalogs. Many of them have been catalogued and can be found by doing a basic keyword search on ‘audiophile’ in MadCat.  Since the Mills Music Library Audiophile collection is partially catalogued and the Stanford collection is not, it seems to me that Mills Music Library is worth considering if you have Audiophile material that you might wish to donate.

Was There a Second Audiophile Label?

The Mills Music Library has an item in its collection recorded by the Miami Chamber Trio on May 28, 1977. It carries the number AR-3103 from the Audiophile company of North Miami, Florida. I have been collecting information for this web site for a couple of years now, and this is the first time I have encountered this label. I would appreciate any information you can provide on this label.
