Hu Chenghan displays two very different syles in the pieces below. The poem about bamboos is in a semicursive hand--xing shu ( 行 書) . The strokes are fluid and vigorous. Several of the characters have ligatures where the brush continues on into the next character linking them in one continuous stroke. The couplet below uses clerical script--li shu ( 隸 書). This style has a tight rectagular structure with strong vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines giving the characters something of a chiseled look. Back |
