Wang Shoushan 王壽善

Wang Shoushan's pieces are very nice illustrations of the clerical style of calligraphy (li shu). This style is characterized by precisely drawn and spaced characters with a somewhat squat, rectangular appearance. The uniformity of the style produces an overall effect of calm and harmony.

Translation of 山行—a poem by Du Mu (803-852 C.E., Tang Dynasty):
Far away on the cold mountain, a stone path slants upwards,
In the white clouds is a village, where people have their homes.
I stop the carriage, loving the maple wood in the evening,
The frosted leaves are redder than the second month's flowers.

Translation of "Leaving White King City," a poem by Li Bai—a.k.a. Li Po, Li T'ai Po—701-762 C.E., Tang Dynasty:
White King City I left at dawn
in the morning-glow of the clouds;
The thousand miles to Chiang-ling
we sailed in a single day.
On either shore the gibbons' chatter
sounded without pause
While my light boat skimmed past
ten thousand sombre crags.

Translation of a poem by Li Bai—a.k.a. Li Po, Li T'ai Po—701-762 C.E., Tang Dynasty:
Sunlight streaming on Incense Stone*
  kindles violet smoke;
far off I watch the waterfall plunge
  to the long river,
flying waters descending straight down
  three thousand feet,
till I think the Milky Way has tumbled
  from the ninth height of Heaven.

* Literally, "incense burner", one the peaks of Lushan.

Translation of Zhang Ji's poem:
While I watch the moon go down, a crow caws through the frost;
Under the shadows of maple-trees a fisherman moves with his torch;
And I hear, from beyond Suzhou, from the temple on Cold Mountain,
Ringing for me, here in my boat, the midnight bell.
