Katsunori Hamanishi's art depicts the separation and harmonious union of seemingly
unlike elements. His work typically includes representational forms of ropes or branches
juxtaposed with fields of color. As there is no single "correct" interpretation of Hamanishi's
work, the artist invites us to understand these works as metaphors or simply as abstractions.
Hamanishi is recognized worldwide as a master of the difficult mezzotint printing process.
Although this method originated in 17th century Europe, the artist has exploited its potential
for subtle gradations of tone to produce striking works of a distinctly Japanese aesthetic.
