Flora Belle (Mercer) Cutchen, 78, passed away on Thursday, June 8, 2006. She was born February 23, 1928 in Macon, Georgia to Lavonia Bramlett and Charlie Mercer. She is preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Jean Sweat, and survived by one sister Bobbie Agrella of Dothan, Alabama, son Gary Cutchen of Victoria, Texas and son Thomas Cutchen of Houston, Texas.

Flo moved to Dothan, Alabama as a child, graduated Dothan High School and married Barney Cutchen. Flo has two sons, Gary and Thomas. In her early adult life as a homemaker Flo resided at various times in Alabama, Louisiana, and California. Flo relocated to the Clear Lake area of Houston in 1969 with her sons, proudly adopting Houston as her hometown. Flo’s favorite pastime included songbird, waterfowl and wildflower sightseeing, especially along coastal and lake areas, and was an avid reader of Texas nature periodicals and books. She loved to dance the two-step and loved everything “Texas”. She loved all activities outdoors, and frequented concerts, BBQ’s, little league ball games, and restaurants along the bay. Flo cherished all of her dear friendships and was especially proud of the accomplishments of her two sons.

Flo especially loved her career in retail sales. She retired from JC Penney at Almeda Mall in 1990 after earning many awards there. She was outgoing and personable and had a creative flair for coordinating both men’s and women apparel for her many regular customers.

But more recently, Flo must be remembered for her unique courage and fortitude as she faced pancreatic cancer. She was an avid walker and with her strength she faced off this malady with a determination and willpower to the amazement of all who knew her. And unto her last breath Flo declared, “There’s nothing wrong with me”, and she was right! Her sweet and loving parents, sister and friends who had passed before her were there at her side, and she passed back into their loving arms.
