John O. Hoyt - Born June 10, 1912 in Detroit, Michigan to the union of John and Margaret Hoyt. He was called to the Lord on Thursday, February 16th, 2006.
Mr. Hoyt is survived by his loving wife Barbara Hoyt; daughter Susan Hoyt; son Richard Hoyt & wife Sharon; 3 grandchildren: Jessica Rush, Kerri Hove & husband Eric, and Shelly Looney & husband Stephen; 3 great-grandchildren: Kaslynn Looney, Kaeden Don Looney, and Riley Grace Hove; 2 nieces: Cynthia Hoyt McCarty & husband Bill and Ellen Hoyt; and 2 nephews: John Hoyt and Robert Hoyt. His extended family includes: Stephanie & Eric Fuentes and children Alissa, Brian and Noah and Terri Kolafa and children Christopher, Katie and Miranda. He will be sorely missed, not only by his family, but by many friends from over the years.
John was preceded in death by his first wife Lois, mother of Susan and Richard; sister Elizabeth; brothers Richard and Robert; and grandson Matthew Rush.
John graduated from Albion College in 1935 and from the University of Michigan Law School in 1938. He moved to Texas in 1941 but, before he could start practicing law, World War II intervened.
Commissioned a lieutenant, he served in the Coast Guard as a gunnery officer and navigator. He served 25 years in the Coast Guard reserve and retired as a Coast Guard Captain. After the war he settled in Humble, Texas where he practiced law for 40 years. He also found time to serve as the Humble City Attorney for 25 years. He was a member of the board of the First City Bank of Humble and for the Humble Area Bicentennial Museum.
In addition, he worked to establish the Humble Hospital Authority and the Floyd Burton Scholarship Fund. He was a member of the Lions Club, a charter member and past president of the Humble Intercontinental Rotary, and the Humble Area Chamber of Commerce. He was named Citizen of the Year in 1982 by the Humble Chamber of Commerce.
John was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Humble, Texas for many years. He taught Bible classes, was a faithful member of the choir, and led the singing in his Bible school class. Some of his many hobbies included fishing, golfing and woodworking.
The family will have a "Celebration of John's Life", followed by a reception, at 1:00 P.M. on Friday, February 24th, 2006, at the First United Methodist Church located at 800 East Main in Humble, Texas. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the First United Methodist Church in Humble or to Kingwood Church of Christ in Kingwood.
John will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
