Barbara Jane Hinds Meehan, 75, passed away December 8th, 2007 in Houston, Texas following a long illness. She was born September 26th, 1932 in Griffin, Georgia to John E. Hinds and Ruth Hinds. She graduated from Griffin High School and Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho and then received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from Valdosta State in Valdosta, Georgia.
Barbara was preceded in death by both parents; her brother John E. Hinds, Jr.; her sister Imogene Hinds Lewis; her husband Donald Nathan Meehan; and grandson Patrick Meehan. She is survived by her children, D. Nathan Meehan & his wife Jan of Spring, Texas, William Robert Meehan & his wife Dinah of Huntingdon, England, David Meehan of Alton, lllinois, and Patricia Ruth Meehan of Houston, Texas. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 3 nieces; and numerous cousins.
Barbara joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints as a teenager. She served her country during the Korean Conflict in the United States Air Force. She was active in several political campaigns and directed much of the 1970 United States Census in south Georgia. Barbara worked in a wide variety of jobs including supporting the Five Civilized Tribes in Muskogee, Oklahoma, teaching and contracting support. She had a long career in Federal Service as Branch Chief of several contracting offices and spent seven years in Italy during separate tours in Aviano and Naples.
Barbara retired to Brenham, Texas and moved to Houston this year. She is remembered as a loving mother, for her keen wit, sense of humor, active mind and a warm, generous personality. She loved to read and was an expert on vampires and gothic literature.
Memorial Services were held at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, December 10th, 2007, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Klein Stake Relief Society Room. Participating in the service were Bishop Chris Merrell, Sister Debbie Almond, Sister Carol Busbee, Brother Tom Murphy, Sister Rebecca Bashaw, and Sister Nena Rawson.
Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, December 27th, 2007, at the Houston National Cemetery located at 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas, phone 281-447-8686. Military Honors will be rendered by the V.F.W. District #4 Ceremonial Detail.
Barbara will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
