MARTHA MIRIAM CURRY, age 87, passed away in Richmond, Texas on May 18th, 2009. Miriam is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Fred Jester, her grandson John and granddaughter Abbey. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Jack. Miriam was born and raised in Waelder, Texas and lived in Houston for over 55 years. She attended the University of Texas at Austin. She met Jack on a blind date when he was stationed at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio after his discharge from the Air Force during World War II. She was told by a friend that Jack was only interested in airplanes, but she decided to go on that date anyway and within a few months they were married. They were married in San Antonio and moved to Detroit, Michigan to be with Jack's family. Miriam always thought that the snow was beautiful until she had to shovel it every day! They then decided to move to Houston where Jack said that the streets were 'paved with milk and honey'. Coming back to Texas allowed Miriam to be closer to her family in Waelder.

When people think of one Curry, they automatically think about both Miriam and Jack. Throughout their marriage, Jack and Miriam enjoyed traveling, entertaining, boating, fishing and going out to fine restaurants with close friends. Their friendships also flowed over to Fred and Martha as well as Fred and Martha's friends that became an extended family. They enjoyed Friday nights with good Mexican food, and who could forget the shows, 'Dallas' and 'Falcon Crest'. The Houston Engineers Club was a special place to sit back, relax, celebrate, discuss current events and college news. Some memorable trips were visiting eight countries in Europe, including a special visit to Normandy. They also traveled to Mexico, Bahamas, Branson, Las Vegas, fall foliage tours in the New England area, an unforgettable cruise and many fun casino trips with their AARP travel group. They were very involved with local politics, running a voting precinct for many years and helped to start the political career of several young politicians. They were also members of St. Luke's United Methodist Church and the Questers Class for many years.

Miriam had a talent for always preparing great meals. There were usually always a few extra visitors about dinner time and they continued to 'come and visit' just to get a good home cooked meal. She always enjoyed entertaining family and friends and was a true Martha. She loved to sew, just like her mother. She sewed from Vogue patterns many amazing dresses which were actually seen from the runway during style shows while having lunch at Sakowitz. Going and looking through the 'pattern books' was a ritual. Miriam also enjoyed working in the yard and working inside her home to make it just perfect for her family.

A special treat from Miriam was breakfast served to her daughter, starting and warming up her car on those 'cold' Houston mornings, making her daughter homemade lunches every day to take to work, giving up her own shopping day to allow her daughter to get a new outfit from Sakowitz or Neiman's, making sure that every hope and dream could and would be recognized while spoiling her daughter completely along the way.

Miriam considered Fred as not just a son-in-law but a son. She may have spoiled her daughter but she spoiled Fred, too! She baked German Chocolate cakes and she and Martha delivered them to Fred on his birthday while he was working at a Christmas tree lot for years. Whatever Fred said that he liked for dinner, even though Martha may not share the same taste, she cooked and prepared for Fred. There were memorable St. Patrick's Day, Easter and Christmas dinners.

She was Mother Advisor of Bluebell Assembly #261 and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star #856.

Her finest accomplishment was being a dedicated and devoted wife and mother. She was always there to wipe a tear away from a broken heart, run a car pool of kids, take flowers to her daughter on special occasions, always have a special care package every time she and Jack went to Fred and Martha's house, drive to the rescue when a baby was crying and always being there for her family.

Jack and Miriam leave an amazing legacy behind for their grandchildren, John and Abbey. Oh, they would be so proud of their accomplishments and the fine young people that they are becoming.

A Memorial Service was held in the Chapel at St. Luke's United Methodist Church located at 3471 Westheimer, Houston, Texas 77027, phone 713-622-5710, on Friday, May 22nd, 2009, at 11:00 A.M. A family internment was held in the Memorial Gardens at St. Luke's prior to the service. Any memorial gifts to honor Miriam, may be made to the St. Luke's United Methodist Church Memorial Gardens.

Miriam will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
