If the deceased served in the United States Armed Forces, the deceased veteran may be eligible for one or more of the following veterans' benefits:

  • Burial Benefits (VA Form 21-530)
  • Cemetery Benefits - Plot/niche for a casket/urn, opening/closing of grave, marker, concrete grave liner (where applicable), and the use of all cemetery facilities for service for the veteran, spouse and any eligible children
  • Headstone or Marker for Installation in a private or state veterans' cemetery (VA Form 40-13 30)
  • United States Flag for burial purposes (VA Form 2008)


To be eligible for the Burial Benefits, the deceased veteran must have been discharged or released from service under conditions other than dishonorable and must have either:
  1. Been in receipt of pension or compensation (or would have been in receipt of compensation, but for the receipt of military retirement pay); or
  2. Had an original or reopened claim for pension or compensation pending and is found entitled from a date prior to date of death; or
  3. Died while traveling under prior authorization or while properly institutionalized by VA.
The cost of transporting the body to the place of burial may be paid in addition to the burial allowance when:
  1. The veteran died of a service-connected disability or had a compensable service-connected disability and burial is in a national cemetery; OR
  2. The veteran died while in a hospital; domiciliary or nursing home to which he/she had been properly admitted under authority of VA; OR
  3. The veteran died en route while traveling under prior authorization of VA for the purpose of examination, treatment or care.


To be eligible for a plot in a National Cemetery, a Headstone or Marker, or a United States Burial Flag, the deceased veteran must have been discharged under conditions other than dishonorable.

A copy of the deceased veteran's discharge papers may be required along with the forms to apply for these benefits. A replacement for lost or destroyed discharge papers can be requested; however, it may take anywhere from 12-18 weeks to receive the replacement documents.
