Select the necessary decal motifs. Working on glazed ware, plan placement by arranging them on the project temporarily. To secure the motifs while designing, use clear adhesive tape rolled double against the back of the decal. This will allow you to move the motifs until the desired effect is achieved. As you work, visualize the completed project . . . planning the decoration in relation to the size and shape of the ware. When decorating multi- sectioned projects such as a box with a lid, a lamp with a base, or a bowl and pitcher, plan the decor with all parts together as they will be used. This will prevent disappointment with poorly placed designs which cannot be corrected after firing and final assembly.
Warm water and a squeegee are used to apply the decal. For shaping the decal onto curved surfaces (such as a very round pitcher), add DECAL SOFTENER to the warm water. DECAL SOFTENER reacts chemically with the decal coating, allowing it to ease and stretch over the curvature of the ware. Use approximately one tablespoon (more or less), depending upon the amount of stretch required. DECAL SOFTENER is a product of Alberta-Meitin Decals. A squeegee is especially important in removing all the water from under the decal film. Because the squeegee has a smooth, flat edge and is more firm than cloth or a paper towel, it provides excellent results when properly used.
Working with one motif at a time, immerse the decal in the prepared warm water. The decal will curl tightly, It will then relax and begin to uncurl, indicating that the adhesive between the decal film and the backing paper is beginning to soften. Immediately remove the decal and place it on a smooth, sealed surface such as a glazed tile, glass palette or formica surface. DO NOT allow the decal to completely soften and float off the backing paper while still in the water. Let the moistened decal remain on the palette for a few moments until the adhesive has completely softened. When the decal slides freely on the backing paper, it is ready for application. Position the softened decal, still on the backing paper, on the project. Carefully slide the backing paper out from under the decal as it is positioned on the glazed surface. Wipe over the decal with a soft damp sponge to help it conform to the shape of the ware, easing and stretching to smooth out any wrinkles. Although the decal may hug the surface, all moisture is not yet removed. . .and the decal is still not firmly adhered to the ware. It still must be carefully squeegeed.
Poor application is the cause of most flaws in decal decoration. Any moisture left under the decal will cause colors to adhere poorly when fired. Even prolonged firing will not overcome or correct this problem since water left under the film dries and is replaced by air pockets. These show up after firing as blow-outs.
To assure good adherence, firmly but gently remove excess water from under the decal using a squeegee. With firm steady pressure, wipe from the center of the design out over the edge, forcing out the moisture and excess glue. Keep the squeegee moist to avoid tearing the film. Gradually work all the way around the decal, wiping from the center toward the edges (like spokes on a wheel), until the decal is firmly adhered. To test adherence, try sliding the decal with thumb pressure, as if repositioning it. If all moisture has been removed, the decal will remain secure. With proper application, prolonged drying time is not required.
Cone 015-016 is suggested for proper firing. For most professional results, use the warmer heat range EXCEPT when using deeply colored glazed and specialty glazes. When stacking the kiln, arrange the load so it is evenly distributed in the firing chamber. Ware should be stilted, and the kiln lid propped for adequate venting. Begin the firing with all switches on low. Gradually increase the heat to medium and then to high, following the recommendations of the kiln manufacturer. The lid should remain propped and all peep holes open until kiln odors diminish and the burn-out is completed. The kiln should then be CLOSED COMPLETELY (including the peep holes), and allowed to reach maturity. Allow the kiln to cool to room temperature before opening.
