A Guide to the Best Whitewater in the State of California Lars Holbek and Chuck Stanley
This is the guidebook to have. Beginners will be disappointed, but intermediate to expert kayakers will have all they can handle. The new edition is hot off the press, look for it at your local river store.
California Whitewater Cassady and Calhoun
A great guide for rafters and kayakers alike. Covers all the major California rivers. Creeks are less comprehensively dealt with. River maps are included for most runs but make sure not to let these replace your good judgement! Ratings tend to be softer than Holbek & Stanley.
Western Whitewater Cassady, Cross and Calhoun
Descriptions and maps for most major runs from the Rockies to the Pacific. I've used this for planning trips to Idaho and the Canyonlands and have been very impressed with the thoroughness of the coverage. This book is too nice, big, and expensive to carry down a river but is an excellent reference!
General information relevant to whitewater boating.
Kayak W. Nealy
I've owned my copy of this 'how to' manual for seven or eight years and still learn something new every time I read it.
Whitewater Tales of Terror W. Nealy
Nealy draws some darn funny cartoons too; though non-educational, Whitewater Tales of Terror is also worth having.
Path of the Paddle Mason
An excellent read for canoists.
The Complete Wilderness Paddler Davidson and Rugge
Tips on planning, outfitting, and conducting canoe trips in wilderness areas.
Song of the Paddle : An Illustrated Guide to Wilderness Camping Mason
More valuable information for wilderness trippers.
Safety and rescue techniques.
The Bombproof Roll and Beyond Dutky
Safety starts at home! Self-rescue is critical for whitewater and sea kayakers alike, and begins with a solid roll. This is a good reference for those having trouble with this non-intuitive maneuver.
River Rescue Bechdel and Ray
In certain circles even discussing rescue techniques is considered uncool. I'm an old fart though and like to think about the 'what if's' a lot. This book has been part of my library since I started boating.
Whitewater Rescue Manual : New Techniques for Canoeists, Kayakers, and Rafters Sundmacher (Contributor), Walbridge
Charlie Walbridge has been chronicalling river mishaps for years, so his book is based on solid
experience.
