Brush Creek
Tulare County, California

Keith Beck, cleared for takeoff.

Short but sweet, Brush Creek is an easily accessible, fantastic steep creek. If looking down over a horizon line and seeing the tops of riverside trees sounds like fun, Brush Creek is the place to be.

The short length of the creek and pain-free logistics mean Brush Creek can easily be combined with other Kern runs to fill out a day of boating. A note of caution though: while boaters in all sorts of craft, and of all levels of ability have taken to running Brush Creek, this is definitely not an amusement park ride. A variety of mishaps including back injuries and broken bones have happened here. Caveat emptor!

The takeout is a dirt parking area at the confluence of Brush Creek and the NF Kern (though people generally don't boat all the way to the Kern). To get to the put in, drive upstream, then turn east on the Sherman Pass road (J41). Turn off J41 within 2 miles, at a sign for a helipad. A small dirt road drops down to the creek here.
