Area Overview Map

At the highest level, a map showing Joshua Tree's location in relation to Los Angeles is provided. At the lowest level are detailed topographic maps showing all the formations for each climbing area in the database. Textual lists of Formations and Routes can be obtained from the lower-level maps.

Shown here is the Area Overview Map. This particular map provides an overview of the climbing areas covered by the database, and allows one to retrieve either detailed maps showing all the formations for a particular area, or to retrieve List Views of all the formations and/or routes for a selected area.

List Views

List Views provide a text-base method for quickly retrieving Areas, Formations, and Routes.

Route List

Check out the Route List. Its filters include Area, Formation, Rating, Quality, Protection, Aspect, and Type of climb. Using a combination of filters it is easy to quickly retrieve, for example, a list of all the south-facing crack climbs in the West Real Hidden Valley.

The resultant list can be sorted by any of the displayed values. For example, the Route List can be sorted by Route Name, Rating, Pro(tection), Quality, Area, Formation, or Aspect. Click on the labelled column header to perform the sort. Clicking a second time will reverse the sort order.

You can also easily mark one or more climbs as "Done" (note the check mark), or just as easily add multiple routes to your personal Hitlist from this screen with a mouseclick.

Personal Hitlist

The Hitlist is a specialized version of the Route List. It only displays routes which you've targeted for climbing. The contents of the Hitlist can be filtered and sorted just as with any other List View screen, to let you quickly narrow down a smaller list of routes for say a morning of climbing.

Detailed Views

Detailed Views display text and maps or photos for the selected Area, Formation, or Route. Right-clicking from a Detailed View is an easy way to obtain related information. For example, from the Route Details screen, you can right-click to obtain a list of neighboring routes, details on the formation, or an overview map of the area.

Route Details Screen

The Route Details form provides fields for you to enter and review your own personal notes about a climb, note whether you've done the route, and add or remove the route from your personal Hitlist. Any climbs marked as "Done" will show up with a check mark in the Route List.

Formation Details Screen

The Formation Details screen shows a photograph of the formation, and usually includes detailed information on easiest approaches. This, combined with the Area Map, removes guesswork when seeking new formations.
