Are You a Blue Angel?
In the summer of 1991, I was working at the Bee Canyon Land Fill, ( a fancy name for A DUMP), behind El Toro Marine Base in Southern California. One afternoon as I concentrated on work, an ear piercing ROAR thundered through the canyon. By that time the third ROAR was over head I looked up and saw a Blue Angel (F/A-18 Hornet) was so close you could see the pilots as they skimmed the hill tops. They flew through the canyon half a dozen more times that afternoon frightening us out of the seat of our tractors each time. Later that afternoon, we heard they were practicing for a show the next week end at the El Toro Marine Base.
I had not thought about the Blue Angels until the next summer when my wife and I were on our way to God's Feast of Tabernacles in Daytona, Florida . Work was slow that year, and we left early for God's Feast. We towed a trailer behind our truck and stopped every night in a different campground to enjoy God's creation. When we stopped in Pensacola, Florida to camp, we were told that we should not leave until we saw the NATIONAL MUSEUM OF NAVAL AVIATION at the Naval Air Station, the home of the BLUE ANGELS TOP GUNS. We did not take time to see it then. On our way home we did make time to visit the museum as well as the other worthwhile exhibits. We picked up a book about the Blue Angels explaining what they represent. They are considered ambassadors as well as professional flyers for the Navy and Marine Corps.
Commander Greg Wooldridge of the United States Navy was the commanding officer and flight leader that year. He said, "Our mission is to assist and enhance the Navy recruiting efforts and to represent the naval services to the civilian community. Basically, the Blue Angels serve as positive role models for young Americans and Good Will Ambassadors for the Navy." They perform at forty sites each year. They survey the show area, identify checkpoints and conduct circle-and-arrival maneuvers. They practice for a week at each site before their show. "No job is more important than any other," said Commander Wooldridge. "They are a community of many talents, each required to accomplish their mission. The hardest part is only being able to select a few to become Blue Angels. (Few meaning eight Pilots). They are professional flyers that represent the Navy and Marine Corps, acting as Ambassadors. They fly F/A 18 Hornets that fly at speeds of well over one and one half times the speed of sound as close together as three feet apart canopy to wing tip. There are one hundred men that have already been trained, and have qualified to take their place if some thing happened to one of them." In order to qualify to be a Blue Angel, you must have good character and set a good example.
(1) They can not be seen with a woman who is not their wife, sister, or mother.
(2) They can not be seen in public where alcohol is served after 9 PM.
(3) They don't receive extra pay for the danger involved.
(4) They train together and are learning to trust each other.
(5) They are of the same mind.
(6) They are trained to follow their leader.
They train like we are being trained to follow our leader--JESUS CHRIST!! There is a parallel of importance in training to be a Blue Angel and training to be in GOD's Kingdom. Only eight pilots are chosen out of one hundred men to represent the Navy and Marine Corp. GOD says in His Word, "Many are called, But few are chosen" (Matt 22:14). Few meaning little, small, or slight in size. Christ said in the book of John, "You have not chosen me, But I have chosen you" (John 15:16). We are like the Blue Angel pilots. At their air show the eyes of the world that have not been chosen to fly those F/A 18 Hornets are on them! The other one hundred pilots that are trained and ready have been called but not chosen. Those eight chosen pilots are special, just like we are special. "For you are a HOLY PEOPLE unto the LORD your GOD. The LORD your GOD has chosen you to be a SPECIAL PEOPLE unto himself above all people who are upon the face of this earth" (Deu. 7:6). Do we understand the deep impact of this verse? We have been CHOSEN as SPECIAL PEOPLE for GOD. This word SPECIAL is from a root word meaning to acquire property, the noun form means private property--a possession. WE ARE GOD's PROPERTY. This verse begins with "..you are a HOLY PEOPLE." The word HOLY signifies PURE, DEVOTED, DEDICATED, SEPARATED. In the Old Testament the word Holy has a strong religious connotation. "You shall be HOLY unto Me for I the LORD AM HOLY and have separated you from other people that you should be Mine" (Lev. 20:26). Have you read the story about Gideon, and his battle with the Midianites? GOD reduced his army from 22,000 to 300 men. GOD shows in Judges 7:2 the reason He did that. It was for their own good. "And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for Me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against Me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me." This is the same reason GOD said, "Many are called but few are chosen." GOD KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING. GOD has called and now chosen us. He does not need a great army of men to fight His battles for Him. GOD's CHURCH is now being prepared for GOD's KINGDOM. We are being given our final instructions NOW!! We are learning to become GOD!!. WE are to "Continue in the things which we have learned and are assured of knowing of whom we have learned them" (II Tim 4:13)
