Scriptural Definition of "Apostasy"
Apostasy, "falling away," is the act of professed Christians who deliberately reject revealed truth.
1. As to the deity of Jesus Christ, and 2. Redemption through His atoning and redeeming sacrifice. "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world" (1 John 4:1-3). "For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ" (Phil. 3:18). "But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction" (2 Peter 2:1).
Apostasy differs therefore from error concerning truth, which may be the result of ignorance, or heresy, which may be due to the snare of Satan. "In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will" (2 Tim. 2:25-26). Both ignorance and heresy may consist with true faith! The apostate is perfectly described in 2 Timothy 4:3-4, "For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables."
Apostates depart from the faith but not from the outward profession of Christianity. "Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away" (2 Tim 3:5). Apostate teachers are described in 2 Timothy 4:3, "For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears." (Read 2 Peter 2: 1-22) "For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ" (Jude 4).
Apostasy is in the Churches of God today, just as it was in ancient Israel. "Why should ye be stricken any more? Ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint. From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment" (Isa 1:5-6). The Church is following in the way of the government of the Nation. The punishment of the Eternal is about to come down upon us. "And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down: And I will lay it waste: it shall not be pruned, nor digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it. For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry" (Isa. 5:5-7). Apostasy is irremediable and awaits judgment from God. "And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness" (2 Thes. 2:10-12). "These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever. "For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them" (2 Peter 2:17-21).
"These are spots in your feasts of love, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear:" Jude 12
The short book of Jude warns us of the apostasy and why it is happening! "Woe unto them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core. These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots; Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever. And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him" (Jude 11-15).
Jude is the book leading to the Book of Revelation. It has been overlooked for so many years, but now we can see it happening and we are living in the last days of apostasy! "And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth" (Rev. 3:14-16).
The Book of 2nd John tells us it is essential we each have a personal relationship and walk with God in believing faith. Why? Because many deceivers are entered into the world. The key phrase in the books of 2nd and 3rd John is "the truth," by which John means the body of revealed truth, the Scriptures. The Bible, the Holy Word of God, the only authority for doctrine and life, is the believer's resource in the time of declension and apostasy.
Second John conditions the personal walk of a Christian in a day of apostasy: Third John the personal responsibility in such a day of the believer as a member of the local church. The Apostle John was not recognized as a leader in the Church at that time. Diotrephes would not receive him and was putting people out of the local church for no reason. "Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church" (3 John 10).
Apostasy is possible! Each one of us must guard our spiritual life because Satan is out to get those he can deceive. "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour" (1 Peter 5:8). "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places" (Eph. 6:12). What are the tools we are to use to fight Satan and his deception at this end time? "Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints" (Eph. 6:13-18).
Don't let apostasy happen in your life! Guard against it as we see the day come when Christ will judge each of us for what we have done in this life.
