God's Divine Laws - Part 2
Part II
Last month we read where Abraham was given charge of God's commandments, statutes, and laws. Let's look at that again. "Because that Abraham obeyed My voice, and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws" (Gen 26:5). Whenever God spoke, Abraham always obeyed without delay! He was faithful in Sabbath keeping as well as paying his tithe. He walked perfectly before God.
Moses understood this also, when he instructed Israel to keep the statutes and judgments of God. "Now therefore hearken, O Israel, unto the statutes and unto the judgments, which I teach you, for to do them, that you may live, and go in and possess the land which the Lord God of your fathers gives you. "You shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall you diminish ought from it, that you may keep the Commandments of the Lord your God which I command you. Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the Lord my God commanded me, that you should do so in the land whither you go to possess it" (Deu. 4: 1- 2,5). And in verse 6, "Keep therefore and do them" ["To do them," is to carry out the intent of the will. A man must purpose to do right, before he does right]. "For this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people." No matter how just and perfect a law may be and the acknowledgment of its existence, God does not compel or force man to observe and obey it's precepts.
The Bible records examples of this. Israel arrived at the foot of Mount Sinai where they received a national charter from God. There they were advised to administer His commandments, statutes and judgments. They emerged from that experience a nation with a perfect system of administration and laws that were deeply impressed upon them.
After entering Palestine, under Joshua's leadership they should have success everywhere they went, but disobedience led to defeat, because they did not obey God's laws. Laws, they told Moses and Joshua they would obey. "And the people said unto Joshua, no; but we will serve the Lord. And Joshua said unto the people, you are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen you the Lord, to serve Him. And they said, we are witnesses. Now therefore put away, said he, the strange gods which are among you, and incline your heart unto the Lord God of Israel. And the people said unto Joshua, the Lord our God will we serve, and His voice will we obey" (Joshua 24:21-24). But did they??
In the book of Kings is recorded Israel's refusal to keep the oath they and their forefathers had taken! We can read they did not obey God's instructions. "The Lord testified against Israel, and against Judah, by all the prophets, and by all the seers, saying, turn you from your evil ways, and keep My commandments and My statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by My servants the prophets. Notwithstanding they would not hear, but hardened their necks, like to the neck of their fathers, that did not believe in the Lord their God. And they rejected His statutes, and His covenant that He made with their fathers, and His testimonies which He testified against them; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and went after the heathen that were round about them, concerning whom the Lord had charged them, that they should not do like them. And they left all the commandments of the Lord their God, and made them molten images, even two calves, and made a grove, and worshiped all the host of heaven, and served Baal. And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger" (2 Kings 17:13-17). We find, judgment was pronounced upon the house of Israel because of their attitude. "And the Lord rejected all the seed of Israel, and afflicted them, and delivered them into the hand of spoilers, until He had cast them out of His sight" (2 Kings 17: 20).
History reveals Israel was taken into Assyrian captivity and 130 years later Judah was taken to Babylon. These captivities began a long period of discipline and Israel identity became lost.
Today they are found to be in the United States of America, Australia, Canada, England and many European countries. Today it is spiritual Israel who has been given the responsibility of restoring God's administration and His supreme written laws. Only in so doing will justice be established.
The time has come for God's chosen---- spiritual Israel, to return, restore and again keep and administer all of God's Commandments---- Statutes and Judgments. Then and only then will true peace, justice and equity be in force for all peoples of the earth!
It is clear that the sins of physical Israel is her refusal to keep and administer God's laws, statutes, and judgments. Inspired Isaiah, unleashed a challenge for God's called, chosen and faithful to "Cry aloud, spare not, lift up there voice like a trumpet, and show My people ( those who have been called ) their transgression, (their disobedience) and the house of Jacob (Israel) their sins" (Isa. 58:1).
Transgression simply means: 1. Rebelling; 2. Disobeying; 3. Taking the law into your own hands. And sin is not obeying God's commandments [laws] (1 John 3:4).
In the book of Deuteronomy, where there are no laws of ordinance or rituals written in over the 660 verse, are found the statutes and laws that are for individuals and nations well being.
The law can be divided into three main provisions. 1)Those laws commanding or prohibiting something; 2) Those laws instructing or charging the individual or nation to do something; 3) Judging and forming decisions under the statutes and Commandments.
We see the commandments, statutes, and judgments can be classified as those laws dealing with human conduct, and personal responsibility, with governmental accountability to God, for the administration affairs of God's soon coming Kingdom.
But it seems dollars are always the temptation and incentive of trying to get around obeying God's laws. We see an example of this today in large portions of the United Kingdom, United States, Australia, South Africa and Canada. Crop producing lands that were once productive, are now drought stricken or ravaged by floods. And we read of streams and springs drying up in many areas. In other areas, much of the topsoil is being eroding away by high winds or heavy rains.
Why, is all this distress being put on the land? Is it a naturally caused situation? Or is it punishment for sin?
When God gave Israel the law on Mount Sinai, He told them to cultivate the land and harvest its product for six years. "And six years you shalt sow your land, and shalt gather in the fruits there of: but the seventh year you shalt let it rest and lie still, [Last part of this verse says] in like manner shall you deal with your vineyard and your olive yard" (Exo. 23:10-11).
God created the land to rest every seventh year. He did not say, do it if you want to! Belief in God's instructions for the seventh year Sabbatical land rest have been ignored. "And the Lord spoke unto Moses in Mount Sinai, saying, ‘Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, when you come into the land which I give you, then shall the land keep a Sabbath unto the Lord. Six years you shalt sow your field, and six years you shalt prune your vineyard, and gather in the fruit thereof." "But in the seventh year shall be a Sabbath of rest unto the land, a Sabbath for the Lord: you shalt neither sow your field, nor prune your vineyard" (Lev. 25:1-4). Israel was to do no plowing nor were they expected to do any sellable harvesting. All yearly labors was to be intermitted in the seventh year. Vs. 5, "That which grows of its own accord of your harvest you shalt not reap, neither gather the grapes of your vine undressed: for it is a year of rest unto the land."
Moses is telling Israel that commercial business of selling or storing up crops the 7th year was not to be done. [That which grows voluntarily in the sabbatical year shall serve as food for our family, servants, and stranger or guest that are with us]. "And the Sabbath of the land shall be meat for you; And for your servant, and for your maid, and for your hired servant, and for the stranger that sojourns with you" (Lev. 25:6). It is alright to glean from the field what was necessary for your own daily use. This is a law that is in effect today if you farm land.
Today, in the country of Israel, they are experimenting to get around this law with new greenhouses to ease sabbatical year farming woes. Jerusalem Post--Monday Sept 4, 2000, "Political battle over sabbatical observation heating up. Ben-- Durion University has announced the development of a special greenhouse that may prove a godsend to vegetable growers here. The greenhouse, initially built to provide a relatively cool environment for desert agriculture, was further modified to solve problems associated with raising crops during the seventh year sabbatical. Shortly after work on the new cooling system began Professor Pasternak was asked to find a way to grow vegetables that conforms with the 7th year sabbatical. Professor Pastermaks team designed a greenhouse based on the wall of drops in which vegetables are grown in long hollow shaped containers suspended from supports along the roof. Because the plants are not in contact with the ground and the hollow shaped containers are filled with coconut shavings rather than soil, the crops so grown do not violate prohibitions against working the land."
In the United States we have practice hydroponics, which means growing plants in nutrient solutions using no soil. Neither way is keeping the spirit of God's sabbatical year of rest. People will do anything not to obey God's laws and ways.
This year 2000, has been a record year for forest fires. 6.6 million acres of forest and underbrush has burned, mostly uncontrolled! The question is, why did the forestry department not try and stop the fires from burning so many acres? The answer to that question is found in "Washington Times, Sept 1, 2000." "Environmental laws curb firefighting." Enviromental regulations meant to protect plants, streams and fish are restricting the use of fire retardants and bulldozers to fight Western fires, according to residents and firefighters alike. Westerners, who are accustomed to assertive firefighting policies under previous administrations, say environmental policies of the Clinton-Gore administration are crippling efforts to extinguish fires--some of which have burned for nearly two months. One firefighter agreed the heavy equipment can cause damage, but said it is easier to reclaim bulldozer lines than thousands of acres of scorched forest. Aircraft assisting in firefighting are being told to steer clear of streams no matter the fire danger, firefighters said. "On one stream, they made them quit pumping water because they were taking too much, making the water temperature come up and hurting the trout. Now the water is completely gone, it just boils down to steam and everything is dead in there anyway," the firefighter said. Is this, the way God intended man to take care of the land He gave them?
From the beginning God instructed man to have dominion over the land. "And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden Of Eden to dress it and to keep it" (Gen 2:15). Dress it is Strong's #5647, meaning: to work; to serve; till; keeping in bondage and labor. Keep it is Strong's #8104, meaning: to hedge about; to guard; protect, attend; to preserve; to observe.
The Apostle Paul wrote in the book of Hebrews, "But one in a certain place testified, saying, what is man, that You art mindful of him? Or the son of man, that You visitest him? You made him a little lower than the angels; You crowned him with glory and honor, and did set him over the works of Your hands: You has put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him" (Heb. 2:6-8). We are to take care of the land on which we live. There is a penalty for disobeying God's laws! The penalty for breaking God's laws are found in Leviticus Chapter 26 and Deuteronomy 28. These two chapters are where we find the blessing and cursing effects of breaking the laws of God!
Several years ago, there was a fire in Laguna Beach, California, an area of Million dollar homes burned to the ground. Most of those homes could have been saved if the owner would have been allowed to clean the brush from around their homes. But the environmentalist would not allow them to touch the plants out side of their fence line, because it would disturb the small animal and plant life. The same scenario happened in San Francisco!
The Apostle Paul was inspired to say man would: "Change the truth of God into a lie, and worship and serve the creature [animal creation] more than the Creator" (Rom 1:25). Just like man has changed the starting of a day from sunset to midnight and changed the starting of a new month from the beginning phase of the dark moon to the middle [or mean] of the dark moon phase. Man would rather believe a lie, then to follow God and His words!
Satan's influence upon man is ever present. Notice, "But it shall come to pass, if you wilt not hearken unto the voice of the Lord your God, [harken includes more than simply hearing, it implies obedience as well]. Moses continues to say, "To observe to do all His commandments and His statutes which I command you this day; that all these curses shall come upon you, and overtake you: [The blessings for obedience exceed the human imaginations, but the penalties for disobedience is going to be equally impressive], Cursed shalt you be in the city, and cursed shalt you be in the field. Cursed shall be your basket and your store. Cursed shall be the fruit of your body, and the fruit of your land, the increase of your kine, and the flocks of your sheep. Cursed shalt you be when you come in, and cursed shalt you be when you go out. The Lord shall send upon you cursing, vexation, and rebuke, in all that you set your hand unto for to do, until you be destroyed, and until you perish quickly; [meaning consume away] because of the wickedness of your doings, whereby you have forsaken Me. The Lord shall make the pestilence cleave unto you, until He have consumed you from off the land, whither you go to possess it" (Deu. 28:15-18). Notice further, "And the heaven that is over the head shall be brass," [heaven ordinarily thought of as the source of moisture, would under the curse of God, provide no more water than could be expected from brass]. The last sentence in verse 23 says, "And the earth that is under you shall be iron [With out moisture the earth is going to be baked hard]. The Lord shall make the rain of your land powder and dust: From heaven shall it come down upon you, until you be destroyed. [The sun and heat of the day is going to replace the rain that is be in its season and time]" (Deu 28:23-24). "You shalt carry much seed out into the field, and shalt gather but little in; [a word picture of a famine] for the locust shall consume it. You shalt plant vineyards, and dress them, but shalt neither drink of the wine, nor gather the grapes; for the worms shall eat them. You shalt have olive trees throughout all your coasts, but you shalt not anoint yourself with the oil; for your olive shall cast his fruit" (Deu. 28:38-40) . "All your trees and fruit of your land shall the locust consume [literally take possession of it, leaving it a like a wilderness]. Moreover all these curses shall come upon you, and shall pursue you, and overtake you, till you be destroyed; because you hearkened not unto the voice of the Lord your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you"(Deu. 28:42,45).
This is certainly not the picture God paints if His laws are obeyed. "And it shall come to pass, if you shalt hearken diligently [Hearken diligently: This is an invitation to a very serious consideration, Moses is notifying Israel that their eternal destiny was in their own hands, because God's hands are tied by mans choices. He has no alternative but to reward a man in harmony with his conduct]. Continuing, "If you shall hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord your God, to observe and to do all His commandments which I command you this day, than the Lord your God will set you on high above all nations of the earth: and all these blessings shall come on you, and overtake you, if you shalt hearken unto the voice of the Lord your God. Blessed shalt you be in the city, and blessed shalt you be in the field. Blessed shall be the fruit of your body, and the fruit of your ground, and the fruit of your cattle, the increase of your kine, and the flocks of your sheep. Blessed shall be your basket and your store. [Your cupboards, your daily food supply, and your daily needs for life, lacking nothing]. The Lord shall establish you an holy people unto Himself, as He has sworn unto you, if you shalt keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and walk in His ways. And the Lord shall make you plenteous in goods, in the fruit of your body, and in the fruit of your cattle, and in the fruit of your ground, in the land which the Lord sware unto your fathers to give you. The Lord shall open unto you His good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto your land in his season, and to bless all the work of your hand: and you shalt lend unto many nations, and you shalt not borrow. And you shalt not go aside from any of the words which I Command you this day, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them" (Deu. 28: 1-14).
The rules and laws for governing in God's Kingdom are all laid out before us in the Bible. This is the book that most people want to ignore. May God help us who are called to "Seek first the Kingdom of God, and His righteousness; So all these things blessings will be added unto us " (Matt. 6:33).
