- HUGH McCAIN ELMORE 09/28/1864 - 09/15/1907 md FLORA LYTLE - my grandparents - They lived in Tennessee.
First in Bedford County then in Williamson and finally in 1900 they bought a home
in Rutherford County where they lived out their lives. Information in a 1972
publication of THE HISTORY OF EAGLEVILLE by Minnie Fairfield Dyer says: "Hugh
McLean Elmore was the first farmer in Rutherford County to successfully raise
burley tobacco. He had been informed that it was indigenous to the soil. In
addition to farming he operated a sawmill in Allisona, Tennessee and was a
stockbroker. He died of typhoid fever in 1907, age 43." At the time of his death
Hugh had just purchased a life insurance policy. The policy had not even had time
to be delivered, but the company did pay his widow the $1,000.00 she was due. The
insurance salesman was heard to remark that he never delivered a check that gave
him more pleasure than the one he delivered to the widow Elmore and her six small
children.
