Information on this Ransom family is based on published copies of the Ransom and Jarratt Bibles, a 1910 family history written by George W Ransom b1839 (with supplemental remarks in 1929 by William Alexander Ransom of St Louis) and the Revolutionaty War Pension files of Richard Ransom's family.
The copy of Bible Records and Tombstone Inscriptions, sent to me by D. Cantagallo of CA, gives PETER RANSOM, b1620, Elizabeth City Co, VA, as 1st known Ransom in this country and his son JAMES RANSOM is reported as father of the JAMES RANSOM presented here.George W Ransom stated in his piece that little is known of James and Amy Ransom except he is of Scotch origin and has one known brother, Gafney, and the following eleven children. These same eleven children are listed in the Bible Records.
- RICHARD RANSOM b1752 d1827 md KIZIAH "KISSIE" PORTISS
- A Revolutionary War Veteran and my 4th g-grandfather. Richard was
born in County Isle-of-Wright, VA. He enlisted early in the Revolutionary War
and served as a Private, Lieutenant and a Captain. He was captured at the battle of
"Gates defeat" on August 16th, 1780. When the prisoners learned that they were going
to be sent to Halifax, England, Richard and ten others made their excape. In order to
evade the enemy they were forced to live on raw corn for eleven days and to conceal
themselves in mud for two days before finally getting back to their command.
