Funeral Customs
Obituaries were published in local newspapers but those papers were weekly or sometimes even bi-weekly publications and were not always delivered to every rural family. It was, therefore, a common practice to print "funeral notices" or "funeral invitations" and deliver them to the homes of friends and relatives or to post them at the community store for everyone to see. Follow this link to view a Funeral Notice dated: Shelbyville, Tenn., Aug. 13, 1927. This invitation was delivered to my grandmother's home outside Eagleville, TN.
