BEDFORD COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
BEDFORD COUNTY, TENNESSEE

Heritage, preservation, and remembrance – these are the goals of the Bedford County Historical Society. The Society traces its roots to a group of Bedford Countians that first met in April 1954 to organize and preserve county records and to compile county history. In July 1965, this group formally organized the Society and regular quarterly meetings have been held since then. The Society normally meets at the First Methodist Church Fellowship Hall on the third Monday night in March, June, and September and the first Monday night in December. Meetings commence at 6:30 pm. with a potluck dinner and a business meeting and program following at 7:30 p.m.

The Society has been active throughout its existence, publishing various books and historical articles, developing the History Room in the Argie Cooper Public Library, and supporting the Bedford County Museum. The Society began publishing the Bedford County Historical Quarterly in 1975 and continues that tradition today. All members receive issues of this publication as a part of their membership. The Society’s latest project is the publication of the Bedford County Family History Book, a 552-page, library-quality, hardbound volume featuring Bedford County families, churches, schools, businesses, communities, and county history. The book contains over 850 family histories and references over 27,000 names in its index.

The Society’s officers are

Carolyn Smotherman - Publications Secretary
