Capt. Blanton's Company, Capt Lytle's Company,
Scudder Rifles, 1st Company "C" (called "A" in April 1862)
and later 2nd Company "F"

This company was organized by Capt Blanton on July 13, 1861, at Unionville, Bedford County Tennessee, and was composed of men from Bedford and Marshall Counties.

William Crisp Blanton was forty-three years old when Tennessee entered the war. He and many of the older men of the south enlisted in the Confederate Army for ten months to assist with the organization and training of the younger soldiers. Most of those older men, who survived that first enlistment, returned home when their time was up and turned their units over to younger men. Capt. Blanton was one of those and so on May 10, 1862, James P. Lytle was elected Capt of Co C, 23rd TN Infantry Regiment..

On July 13, 1861, this company was assigned to Camp Anderson at Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where they drilled for several months. In September 1861 they moved to Camp Trousdale, Kentucky, and by November they were in Boling Green.1 By April 6, 1862, they were in the battle at Shilo.

The following is a list of men who served with "Scudder Rifles, Co. C.," as printed in an old Tennessee newspaper. Names in blue and information in most footnotes are from Capt J. P. Lytle's report immediately following the battle of Murfreesboro.
