On January 16, 1862 Confederate Soldier, D.M.S. Philpott, wrote to his
cousin Puss Hasting. One hundred or so years later a copy of that letter
was sent to, Tom Philpot b03/21/1911 of Bedford County, TN. Then in c1985
Tom Philpot sent a copy of that letter to LColey. The following note
accompanied the letter that was sent to LColey:
"It was known in the Philpott family records that D.M.S. Philpott was born
in 1845 and that he was a son of Charles Thomas Philpott and Rebecca Rice
Hix. He enlisted in the 41st Regiment on November 26, 1861. From that
time on, D.M.S. Philpott was lost to local records. A short time ago a
lady in California contacted Tom Philpot and then sent him a copy of the
letter. The lady was a great granddaughter of Puss Hastings.
D.M.S. Philpott was captured February 16, 1862 and he died March 2, 1862.
Rebecca Rice (Hix) Philpott had an aunt who married Demearquis Dewes and
I suppose Demarcus was named for him but didn't know how to spell the name
so he went by De Mark S in his military records."
