Whalen's Station

One hundred and fifteen miles from Little Rock and fifty-three from Fort
Smith. Population, 100.  Know in the United States Postal Department as 
Coal Hill.  George S. Williford, postmaster, mails daily.  One church 
edifice for four denominations and one school. This place is located in 
the center of the coal producing region, about three miles from Arkansas 
River landing, and is of recent growth, the first house was built in 
October 1876.
