The Things Kids Say

ByGloria Sample

Amanda's dad, Richard, had dropped her off at our house late in the evening. He was going night fishing and she didn't want to go.

Robert and I had been working in the yard all day and I hadn't thought about dinner. Amanda wanted Chicken Express. PaPa (Robert) said he wanted two pieces - Chicken legs are his favorite. Amanda wanted two chicken legs and I wanted a chicken breast.

Robert was still cutting trees and hauling them to the front, so Amanda and I went to get the chicken. We got three boxes of chicken - one for me, one for PaPa and one for Amanda.

When we returned, Robert was still working and said for us to go on and eat. He added that he eat later.

After Amanda and I ate our chicken, I went back outside to helped Robert and put up the gardening tools.

Amanda came out a little later and asked me how much her chicken cost. I told her, "It cost one dollar a box." Then I asked, "Are you still hungry?"

She replied, "No."

When Robert finally came in from outside, Amanda was in the bathtub. I asked him if he was ready to eat now and he said, "Yes."

I handed him the chicken box and went to check on Amanda. Suddenly, I heard him hollering for me to come there.

When I got there, he was laughing. He handed me the chicken box. Inside it were two bones and a dollar bill.
