Gilbert Burks Retires
After 42 Years

By Dan Reed

August 15, 1997 - Gilbert I. Burks, Chief Clerk, retired after having served 42 years with, Cotton Belt, Southern Pacific, and Union Pacific.

Gilbert started railroading at Mt. Pleasant, Texas in April 1955. After service in the Air Force from 1957 to 1962, he returned to Dallas.

In April 1962, he moved to the SSW Freight Station at Dallas and has worked at Dallas, Hodge, Carrolton, & Gilmer.

He has spent more than twenty years at Miller Yard working the Pig Ramp and Yard Office.

A party was held to celebrate his retirement, and he was presented a watch inscribed with the Cotton Belt emblem by his railroader friends. We will all miss Gilbert's unique sense of humor.

His plans for retirement include wood working at his shop on Tom Sawyer Rd. south of Alma and not having to worry about work.

If you're down his way, drop in. Dan is a locomotive engineer at Miller Yard in Dallas.
