Rules of the Way

By Eddie Exum

Children all over the Fort Worth - Dallas area are returning to school this month. My wife, Barbara, teaches in the Arlington Independent School District. We both agree we have never seen a summer pass so quickly. We have only 30 more days till fall and cooler weather.

Softball News

:
Eleven of us made the 12-hour trip to Omaha by van to play in the Operation Red Block Softball Tournament.

The team won their first two games on Saturday. This gave us high hopes.

On Sunday morning, we lost to our own Diesel Shop, then to a team from Omaha, called "Maroon." Boy!, would we like another chance at those guys.

We placed out of 17 teams participating.

Thanks to all who put on this tournament, and to our local supervisors for their support, from the director on down.

Thursday, August 7, in a rain that started the night before and continued all day, Maintenance of Way personnel, Hulcher Services, Signal people and others, removed the two diamonds at the south end of Ney Yard and cut in a new Number 14 Turnout switch from the old MKT to the old SP main line.

It was a lot of hard work handled in a professional way. I'm glad I was a part of it. More tracks and more switches will be added at this location soon.

The new BNSF and Barnhart Wye switches will be installed south of Tower 55 during the next two weeks.

On August 14, ballast arrived to be unloaded on the Chico Project.

Mesquite:

The lime-ing process is nearly complete and aggregate material is arriving by rail. Turn-around on the gondolas to keep material on hand for concrete pouring is going to be tight.

More track switches are scheduled to be laid with in the next 30-days.

Late news from Mr. Steve Martchenke. Possible Operation Lifesaver Work he is doing may get the Louden Street Crossing south of Ney Yard closed.

School Zones are open everywhere, and school buses are stopping to pick up and discharge kids at many locations. Look out for them.

Many of us have had a good safe year. Let's keep it that way. Eddie is track inspector at Mesquite Intermodal Facility.
