There are two very large Mulberry trees in our front yard. Our grand kids climbed them even before they walked. Sage and Gauge (not twins) were playing in the trees one evening and were loudly discussing who's tree was the best. Over the years, as the trees have grown, the root of one tree have protruded a little above the ground.
One day, Sage asked me, "What is that coming out of my tree?"
I told her, "That's part of the tree's roots."
She asked, "What is that?"
I replied, "That's where the tree gets its food -- through its roots. If you cut them or break them off, the tree might die."
A little later I was in the house and heard Sage screaming, "Mi-Mi! Come quick! Gauge is walking on my tree's bones and he's going to kill it!"
