Chunnel "Driver" Julian Hill
visits Fort Worth - Dallas
By Cy Martin
This past weekend (July 16-20) the Fort Worth Service Unit was honored with a visit from one of our British colleagues. He was shown various places of interest to rails around the area by Tom Grecco, John Smith and myself.
Brother Julian Hill is member of the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen. He is an "Engine Driver" for the Scotland, Britian and Wales Railway. His territory includes the famous "Chunnel" -- the 32-mile railway tunnel which runs beneath the English Channel between Dover and Calais, connecting England and France.
Julian no stranger to UP CROSSROADS. In the past, he has authored two articles for us describing his duties.
Julian Hill toured the McKinney Avenue Transit Authority and is shown the Power Station by Ed Landrum.
This photo was taken by Julian near the French of the "Chunnel" in Calais, France. The locomotive is a British Railways Class 92. It was built in 1994 for the French NCFRR.
Cab interior of above Class 92 Locomotive. Throttle, reverser, etc., are to the driver's right. Air Brake controls are to the left. Cab signals, raido controls, speed recorder and air gauges are on the panel under the windshield.
This is the Engine House in New Romney of the Romney, Hythe & Domchurch Railway near Julian Hill's home in Kent. This is a 16-inch gauge narrow gauge line that hauls school children on a 16-mile route. Note the American style "Pacific." Also take note of the large hose for vacuum brakes..
