Margarett Martin McClain names 3 sons Edmund, Joseph and Amos. Her living McClain decendants in Shelby Co. IL know they are related to the Martins and family legends such as one about Elizabeth Hennessee being 1/4 Cherokee Indian. GGrandaughter Lennie said Martin family originated in Attleboro/Rehoboth, Bristol Co. Mass.

Elizabeth: Elizabeth is listed on Sebastian Co. AK 1860 census as born in North Carolina, on later census most of her children list her bp as N.C. Her father b Burk Co N.C. Husband listed on Warren Co.TN 1820 census, lived adj James D. Hennessee. Albert Hennessee is also on the 1820 Warren Co. census and buys land in Shelby, Il. IL 1836 ajacent to land later owned by her children 1863-75. Baber family associated with Hennessees and Martins. Early family members agreed that Elizabeth was 1/4 Cherokee Indian.

Martin b. 22 Mar 1828 d. 7 Mar 1908. 1860 Sebastian Co AK census lists Mary Jane Thomason living in the household of Edmund A Martin. 1880 census lists Alvis Thomason 7 years old nephew in household of Edmund A Martin. The Thomasons had a long association with the Martins as can be seen from proximity of their homes shown on census 1830 on.

It cannot be proven at this time that James C is the son of Amos, however his birth date fits and and he is the only male available to date to fill the reqt. Believed moved Jackson Co. MO 1860 w/neph James son of bro. Josiah Mart.

Margarett was married with the consent of Amos Martin per Effingham loose papers in County Clerk's office. Married by Jessie Parkhurst J.P. She names her sons Joseph and Edmond which indicates she is sister to Edmund A & Joseph Ervin Martin. In 1850 she is living in Shelbyville and according to 1he 1880 census she is living one family away from John Wesley Smith and Elizabeth Ann Martin Edmund A Martin's daughter. A map of the area shows both families to be whithin a mile of the homes of Joseph & Edmund A in 1870.

Joseph: Joseph served in the Black Hawk war in 1832 from Shelby Co. Il under Capt. Peter Warren. His father was from South Carolina his mother from Ireland per 1880 Shelby Co. Census where his family is No. 1157.

Isaac: In 1860 this family lived in Okaw Twp Shelby Co. Isaac appears to have signed John Wesley Smith's Civil War Pension request. John was Elizabeth Ann Martin's husband. Isaac was most probably her cousin. his father was her grandfathers brother. Sophronia A Sorrels was the daughter of Elizabeth Ann Martin's aunt Rachel martin Sorrels. Isaac served in the Union Army.

She is the only girl Martin girl in Effingham the right age to fill the reqt. Her brother Josiah's widow married George Washington Nelson her husband's brother.

He is proposed to fill the rqt. of the census for a male child born in his time frame. Calvin was arrived at by process of elimination male Martins from 1850 census and Effingham marriage records. In addition Calvin names one of his daus. Margarett, the name of his oldest sister. Calvin is believed to have moved to Kansas.

By analysis of the 1820 Warren Co. TN, 1830 and 1840 censuses we arrive at number of children of Amos and their birth year. By a process of elimination of proven relationships in the county, best guess is Josiah is son of Amos. Josiah's last child of record b. 1855, Louisa Jane remarries G.W. Nelson July 8 1857. Josiah probably died between 1855 and 1857.

. . * James H Martin b. 1847 m. 26-Dec-1967 Catherine Armstrong Is supposed to have gone with his uncle James to Kansas after his father died when he was nine years old. He is supposed to have joined the 15 Kansas Cav(Union) during the Civil War with his Uncle. The author believes he went to Jackson CO. Mo with his uncle James C Martin who left Effingham between 1850 and 60'. It is not known if James C was in the army he would have been 47 at that time.

Mar 16, 1921 Amanda Jane's death certificate states that her father was named James and her mother's maiden name was Seals. She was born according to her descendants, in Effingham County IL and the marriage records list her marriage there. No Seals families are found in the Effingham census 1840-1860, there is a boy named Geo. W. Seales listed marrying Lucinda Malissa Tipsword, 2 Sept. 1869 by J. N. Tipsword MG book B p146. My best guess is that Amanda Jane belongs here. The name Amanda was on the Martin hit parade in Effingham back then!

This is probably the same William S Martin buried in Oak Grove Cem. Shelby Twp he was known to Edmund and Joseph Martin per probate records and land trans. Edmund named a son William Spencer. Sister Margarett Martin McClain named her first son William Spencer. Joseph Ervin had a grand son William Stanley Martin.

John: Civil War vet. served in an artillery company. Was captured and sent first to Libby prison, then to Andersonville, survived and returned to his home in Indiana. Left there on his way to Kansas through Ill. met Edmund Martin and went to work in a store Edmund had interest in as a clerk, finally married Edmund's eldest daughter Elizabeth.

Both of these men were over 6 feet tall. Joseph's Union Army records list him as being 6'1", black hair, and blue eyes.

Pearl: Twin of Rev. Harold A. Schuler's father Ft. Smith Arkansas. Their mother was a Hickman and came to Arkansas from Mattoon IL. area. according to telephone interview with Charlotte Martin Zachry of Broken Arrow OK.

The author has a mini ball Joseph brought back from the war. It is thought to be from the Vicksburg battle. It was given by Joseph's son James Ervin Martin to William David Martin. Fought opposit 13th Texas Cav. CSA @ Camden, Jenkins Ferry, author's wife's Grand Father x 3's regiment.

Sara: Brother Peter Dawson went back to Ill. and joined 126th Ill. Inf. co K with her husband in 1862, leaving dau. Rosabell wife Arnitha Glisson.

Ida: James Ervin Martin calls her Edie city birth records call her Edith, her mother was Mary Ritter born June 1841 in Switzerland.

Mrs Francis Marion Martin Cy Martin's Book Ne N' Jim lists the daughters as Jinny, Linney and Olla. He states that uncle frank went back to Texas when the girls got married. Joseph Ervin's obit. states in 1922 that he is survived by a son Frank in Texas. His projected age at death would be 85+- 10.

. . . * Thomas H Martin The sex of this child is confusing on the actual census as if the taker marked dau and scribbled over it. WDM believes this child was a male and named after father's great uncle.

. . * James Ervin Martin b. 10 AUG 1866 d. 17 SEP 1949 m. Emma Brandenburg b. 16 AUG 1869 d. 23 AUG 1955 Owned a quarry near the water works on Bailey Hill in Ft. Smith. His house at the corner of 16th & Q exhibits his stone work in a terrace with stairs in back. On the east side is the limestone foundation of the original house in the late 1890-1910 photo, his father Joseph lived next door. Pausie kept a goat and provided a ladder so the goat could climb on the roof and eat china berries from a tree that grew next to the kitchen. He tried to get us kids to drink the goats milk, he said "drink it!, hit'll make ya live fo evah."

Emma: Immigrated US ca. 1870s. Attended grammer school in Sherman Texas. Family has not been found on passenger list from LA or Texas ports of entry for the era. Her father would not allow the children to speak any language but English. She told grandaughter Fay Martin that she was born in Alsace. Her father got a letter in 1897 from Klingneau, Canton Argeau Switz. A Brandenberg family lived in Unterlunkhoffen 20mi from Klingneau from late 1700s and were citizens per internet. Ten to 15 Brandenbergs live in Klingneau today.
