Power was originally a Kawasaki 440 FA with 2.6/1 PRSU and 64 X 32
Tennessee Propeller Inc. wood prop. I considered this to be a bit under
powered and have changed to a 50 hp Chaparral G44BW liquid cooled,
reed valve, 2 cylinder inline 2 stroke using the same reduction drive swinging
a 66 X 34 Tennessee Propeller Inc. wood prop. This is an excellent
engine that I would never hesitate to use again.
The gear are my own design, using springs because I deemed the bungee gear inadequate. Cad drawings of my gear design are available by e-mailing a request to ddmorrow@flash.net including your name and RagWing number if available. If you can accept Autocad DXF or DWG files or Cadkey PRT file, these can be e-mailed to you for free however there will be a $3.00 (US) printing and mailing charge for snail mail. A similar gear design is also available for the Preceptor N3 Pup.
Weight is of major concern in this plane, especially at the tail. Most "Specials" that I am aware of have an aft CG if flown by a pilot over 180 or so lbs., and require some ballast up front. Roger Mann has said that his prototype was built under legal ultra light weight limits (USA), but the plans and materials have changed considerably since, and getting one in at under 254 lbs. is next to impossible.
On May 31, 1998 RagWing Special #067 took to the skies for it's maiden flight with pilot Frank Folbre doing the honors. There were some minor problems, but Frank reported the plane flew very well and felt solid and stable. The horizontal leading edge was raised 3/8" along with adding a static port to correct erratic airspeed indications, and a rudder trim tab.
Just Lifting off
Past the spectators
Into the wild blue yonder
I first flew it on July 26th, 1998 and found it to be a bit under
powered with the Kawasaki 440A but with good handling characteristics.
The engine was then changed to the Chaparral. The flying qualities are
much the same as described by Mike Kindon in the Builders page.
