Habitat for Humanity Day
Members and volunteers from the Community Outreach & Exhibits Committee and the
Younger Member Committee as well as other Branch Members joined hands to participate in
the construction of a house as part of the Habitat for Humanity program on May 8, 1999.
The house is located in a Habitat community of houses in the Pleasant Grove area of
Dallas. Sophia Illiadou, P.E., President, Fernando Villarreal, E.I.T. and Kim Limberg,
P.E., Outreach & Exhibits Committee Cochairpersons, and Lissa Whitehead, E.I.T.,
Younger Member Committee Chair were joined by Jeremy and Melody Adams, Darren Bryant, Sean
Carraway, Armando Escamillia (UTA), Jose Garcia, Chris Lam, Daniel Limberg, Carlos Negron
and Ron Peron. The group made arrangements and planning for this event, provided
refreshments and volunteered valuable time. The group completed the roof frame for the
house as the eventual homeowner, Ms. Sharon Epps, cheered them on throughout a warm day.
The group paused for a group picture and dedication of another house that was completed by
the Dallas Bar Association. Everyone expressed a great sense of accomplishment. The Board
appreciates everyone's effort and hopes to attract more volunteers for the next event. See
a photo album of this event at the bottom of this Newsletter.
A Civil Engineer's Story
During the past two Branch involvement days with the Habitat for Humanity, a Habitat staff
volunteer directed, motivated and effectively and energetically assisted the ASCE
volunteers. This staff member, Debbie Willhelm, is a civil engineer who after years of
helping Dallas by designing highways as a TxDOT engineer decided to volunteer her talent
and energy in various ways including the Habitat for Humanity in the past year. Debbie
expresses a great sense of purpose and satisfaction in this endeavor and is a valuable
example of what civil engineers can contribute to their community. .She will be recognized
in one of the upcoming meetings.
Winning Interviews Seminar
ASCE Continuing Education will conduct a seminar titled "Winning the Short-List
Interview" in Dallas June 17-18, 1999 at Sheraton Brookhollow. The seminar is
designed to examine the interview process from early identification of project
opportunities through development, rehearsal and delivery of a successful presentation. To
register, please contact Lynn Leckrone at 1-800-548-2723 ext. 6253 or visit the ASCE
National Website at www.asce.org or click here to go the seminar's page.
Meeting Before the Meeting
Many Branch Members meet prior to the regular Monthly Meetings to socialize and network. A
group of Members with many years of experience and much wisdom can usually be seen around
a table. They are civil engineers who have contributed to the building of Dallas. Their
expertise is varied. There are Fellows, and Honorary Life Members as well as principals
and chief engineers of major firms and government agencies. They have significant stories
to tell. Some of their stories will be told in the future as part of the Newsletter or the
Website articles. Meanwhile, stop by their table and gain some knowledge and wisdom.
Trinity River Clean-up
A major volunteer clean-up day for the Trinity River was held on May 15, 1999 at various
outposts along the river . The clean-up organizers were able to attract attention to the
on-going need for clean-up and public education on the potential of the river corridor.
See the Trinity River Corridor Project Website, or the Dallas
Morning News article on the efforts before as well as after
the clean-up for more information.
CE in Government Award
ASCE is seeking nominations for outstanding civil engineers who work for governmental
agencies. For information, please contact George Williams, P.E. at (210) 675-7712 or CJNP39B@prodigy.com.

Branch Fax and E-mail Databank
Ivan Nicodemus, P.E., Treasurer, has accumulated a databank of fax numbers of the Dallas
firms to send Branch Meeting announcements. One fax is sent to each firm. If you receive
the fax, please post it on your bulletin board to inform everyone in your office. If your
firm is not on the list, please fax Ivan (number is on the Branch Directory on the back
page of the Newsletter).
The Branch is now in the process of developing a databank
of e-mail addresses for quicker dissemination of important notices. One e-mail will be
sent to each firm and its contact. The contact will then be asked to e-mail internally to
the firm's engineers. If you would like your firm to be added to this databank, please
e-mail Ivan at cmaq@onramp.net or Roger Behgam, P.E., Newsletter/Website
Editor at roger_behgam@earthtech.com. You may e-mail all
Board and Committee Chairpersons from the Branch Website.
Newsletter Deadline
Due to delays in distribution of the Newsletters through the bulk mail process, the
deadline for accepting news items and ads has been changed to the first day of the month
for the preceding month (i.e.: January 1 for the February Newsletter). Please forward your
