Dallas/Fort Worth Golf Tournament
The annual Golf Tournament between the Dallas and Fort Worth branches of ASCE is fast approaching. Dallas Members are encouraged to form teams for this challenging and fun event. The winning Branch will retain the famous golf banner and bragging rights for the whole year. The "Golf Rivalry" has been an integral part of our relationship with the Fort Worth Branch. We hope to see several Dallas teams at this year's event.

Lissa Whitehead, E.I.T., Younger Member Chair, reports that this year's event will be on Friday, May 21, 1999 at the Grapevine Golf Course (3800 Fairway Drive) with a 7:30 AM shotgun start. Cost is $50 and includes green fee, 1/2 cart, lunch and prizes. The proceeds benefit the ASCE Scholarship fund. The golf tournament registration form is available here. Help Support the Future of our Profession
The ASCE DFW Golf Classic benefiting the ASCE Scholarship Fund is seeking sponsors to help build on the successes of past year's tournaments. The tournament is scheduled for Friday, May 21, 1999 at the Grapevine Municipal Golf Course. The format is a 4-person scramble with a shotgun start at 7:30 am. This tournament is a challenge match between the Dallas and Fort Worth Branches for bragging rights for the year. This year, we want to extend the challenge to include sponsorship money raised so we are encouraging all firms to please sponsor the event at one of the levels listed below.

  • Recognition at registration and awards lunch

  • Recognition at registration and awards lunch

Community Outreach & Exhibits Committee Updates
Fernando Villarreal, E.I.T. and Kim Limberg, P.E. of the Committee report that the Committee is still looking for volunteers for a Habitat for Humanity Volunteer Work Camp. The event is scheduled for Saturday, May 8, 1999 (Mother's Day weekend) and will be part of Habitat's summer push. An entire community of houses is scheduled for construction. Trinity River Clean-up
A major volunteer clean-up day for the Trinity River has been scheduled for Saturday, May 15, 1999 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Twenty different outposts along the river will be available. For more information, please contact Operation ACT at (214) 670-5741.

1999-2000 Dallas Branch Officers
Quinn Spann, P.E, reports that the Nominations Committee consisting of Jean Maier, P.E.; Bud Beene, P.E., Fritz Beck, P.E and Quinn has made the following recommendations for the next year's Board:

Senior Director                Vicki McMullough, P.E.

Treasurer                       Jeff Ground, P.E.
Younger Member           Tom O'Grady, P.E.

Each of the candidates have been contacted and are willing to serve. The current President-Elect, Mac McWilliams, P.E. has been contacted and is willing and able to serve as President. In accordance with the Dallas Branch Bylaws (Amended March 5, 1997) he is automatically the incoming President. In accordance with the ASCE Branch Bylaws, as amended on March 5, 1997, the recommendations were read at the April Meeting of the Dallas Branch. Election of officers will be conducted at the May Meeting in accordance with Robert's Rules of Order. The installation of officers will be conducted at the annual meeting of the Dallas Branch in July.

April Meeting
The April Dallas Branch Meeting was well attended with over 260 Members and guests (among top three attendance records). The program included a sneak peak at the conceptual design of the Trinity River Corridor improvements including a system of lakes and parks, a parkway along the levees and new architecturally significant bridges linking both sides of the river. Two UTA student paper contest participants presented a brief summary of their paper and were awarded prizes. The Engineering Management Committee held a seminar on the Engineering Code of Ethics and Professional Liabilities after the regular Branch Meeting. The Branch Board and Committees appreciate your attendance as they strive to bring interesting and worthwhile programs and hope to see more of the Members at the monthly Meetings.

Civil Engineering News

Environmental Information on the Internet
ASCE will conduct a six-hour telephone/internet course providing a working knowledge of the internet as an environmental information resources and databases. Several sessions are planned for May 1999 (cost $345). For information, contact ASCE National at (800) 548-2723.

Branch Fax and E-mail Databank
Ivan Nicodemus, P.E., Treasurer, has accumulated a databank of fax numbers of the Dallas firms to send Branch Meeting announcements. One fax is sent to each firm. If you receive the fax, please post it on your bulletin board to inform everyone in your office. If your firm is not on the list, please fax Ivan (number is on the Branch Directory on the back page of the Newsletter).

The Branch is now in the process of developing a databank of e-mail addresses for quicker dissemination of important notices. One e-mail will be sent to each firm and its contact. The contact will then be asked to e-mail internally to the firm's engineers. If you would like your firm to be added to this databank, please e-mail Ivan at cmaq@onramp.net or Roger Behgam, P.E., Newsletter/Website Editor at roger_behgam@earthtech.com. You may e-mail all Board and Committee Chairpersons from the Branch Website.

Due to delays in distribution of the Newsletters through the bulk mail process, the deadline for accepting news items and ads has been changed to the first day of the month for the preceding month (i.e.: January 1 for the February Newsletter).
