Program: Geotechnical and Civil Engineering Aspects of Tunnels
Underground
civil works are becoming increasingly common in this new millennium. This trend appears particularly true for Texas. Certainly, the most notable upcoming project in
the county is planned for here in North Texas, the LBJ tunnels. There are many different challenges and
opportunities associated with underground engineering and construction. The October Program presentation provides an
overview of some of the unique geotechnical and civil engineering aspects of tunnel and
underground space projects.
Speaker: Hugh T. Kelly, P.E., P.G., Senior Geological
Engineer, Fugro Consultants, LP
Mr. Kelly has unique expertise in rock engineering and underground structures. He has developed highly specialized experience in
computer modeling of ground behavior and ground (soil/rock) to structure interaction. Naturally, through his background in North Texas,
he is experienced in the behavior and design of structures and pavements on expansive
soils. His design experience includes deep
and shallow foundations, tunnels, shafts, earth structures (dams, levees, and landfills),
retaining walls, roads, pavements, bridges, towers, mechanically stabilized earth walls,
and open cut excavations. He has performed
geotechnical design for structures in numerous types of soils and a variety of rock types
both in the United States and Internationally.
He has contributed
to projects such as the Superconducting Super Collider, Addison Tunnel, Benbrook Tunnel,
Panama Railroad Tunnel, Dallas North Tollway, DART, and various local highways including
LBJ 4-West. He has published several
technical and professional papers. He
received a Bachelor of Science in Geological Engineering from New Mexico State University
and a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington. Mr. Kelly is also an adjunct professor in Geology
at Navarro College in Corsicana.
Installation of 2004-2005 Board
Officers and Texas Section Updates
In addition
to the Octobers technical Program, the ASCE Texas Section President - Elect, Dan
Hartman, P.E., will install the new 2004-2005 Dallas Branch Board Officers. Mr. Hartman will also provide a brief update on
the Texas Section activities including the recent Fall Meeting in Houston. Mr. Hartman has served ASCE as the Fort Worth
Branch President as well as the Texas Section Director at Large and VP Professional. He is a Vice President with Schrickel Rollins and
Associates, Inc. in Arlington practicing civil engineering.
He received his bachelors degree in Civil Engineering from Texas
A&M University.
Please be sure to attend one or both of our
