October 1998 Newsletter October Branch Meeting Topic - Special Joint Meeting with SAME and TxITE Engineering Management Seminar A Panel Discussion on Engineering Fees Presented by the Engineering Management Committee Your firm has won the project, a scope of services is developed, and you are ready to proceed. First, an agreement must be struck on the amount of the engineering contract. In many cases, a fee is determined by the client prior to determination of the design team. In other words, you may be stuck with an unacceptably low fee. Our October presentation will investigate the methods that both municipal entities and consulting firms use to develop fees for projects. The Engineering Management Committee will present another Engineering Management Seminar immediately following the Special Joint Meeting on Tuesday October 13, 1998 with the SAME and TxITE concerning the "Cost of Engineering Services". This will be a panel discussion consisting of two engineers form the public sector, David Dybala ,P. E., City of Dallas Director of Public Works and Transportation Department, and Tim Tumulty, P. E., City of Carrollton Director of Public Works and Engineering and a representative from the consultant community, Bob Reach, P.E., Vice President of Turner Collie & Braden in Dallas. This will be a very informative seminar and the Committee encourages all ASCE, SAME and TxITE Members to attend. The Seminar will begin at approximately 1:15 PM and will only cost $5.00 to cover the cost of the room. The meeting room will be announced at the monthly Meeting and a sign will be provided in the hotel lobby. City of Dallas News Madonna Smith, P.E. of the City of Dallas Public Works and Transportation Department reports the following City news item of interest. The City of Dallas Water Utilities Department currently has plans to install a 48" water transmission line in Walnut Hill Lane from Harry Hines Boulevard to just east of Inwood. The new main will be able to accommodate the existing capacity of the Elm Fork Pump Station and will increase the delivery capacity of the water distribution system in the N-NE quadrant of the city by 25 million gallons per day. The Water Department anticipates the 48" main will protect the city from having to resort to extreme measures if weather similar to that experienced this summer is encountered in the future. The project is scheduled for a construction award date of December 1998. September Newsletter The September Newsletters were delivered late.
