Johnny Dollar: Mr Action Packed!
These early rockabilly-era recordings by country star Johnny
Dollar were lost for over 40 years until their recent discovery and release on
this rare and fascinating disc. THE ALBUM: Johnny's raw
interpretations of Jack Rhodes' classics "Rockin' Bones" and "Action Packed"
later influenced the now-famous rockabilly star Ronnie Dawson, who copied their
arrangements note-for-note. Although Ronnie definitely made the songs his own,
Johnny Dollar's original versions stand alone as long-lost classics of the "cat
music" genre with influences that include early Elvis Presley, Warren Smith and
Gene Vincent. The record also features lead guitarist Howard Reed, who
later joined Gene Vincents' Blue Caps as a replacement for Johnny Meets; and
incredible teenage piano pounder C.B. Oliver, who gives Jerry Lee a run for his
money at the keyboards. In addition to these amazing studio recordings, the set
includes two live performances recorded at the legendary Big "D" Jamboree in
1958 in front of a screaming female audience. This disc is the second in
the "Legends of the Big "D" Jamboree" series and makes a fine addition to the
archives of classic 50s-era rockabilly at its best. Also included are alternate
mixes, rare family photos and a biography of the artist. Songs:
Slim Jim Baby, Car Coat Beat, Action Packed, My Gal Friday, Green-Eyed Cat,
Rockin' Bones, Don¼t Blame It On Me, Great Balls of Fire (live at the
Big "D" Jamboree), Jailhouse Rock (live at the Big "D" Jamboree),
It's My Day, Keep Me in Your Heart, Honey Bee Love, Plenty Lovin', My First
Love, Dolly Dolly, R&R War Dance, Goofin' Around. BONUS TRACKS: Action
Packed (alt. mix), Car Coat Baby (alt. mix and title), Rockin'
Bones (alt. mix).
