March Kite Campout 2000 - Sandia Pueblo

Troop 285 enjoyed a great weekend camp on March 17-19, 2000, on the Sandia Indian Pueblo. The theme of the camp was Kites, and as is typical in New Mexico in March, we had PLENTY of wind for kites. Saturday morning was spent decorating the kites. Donnie C. won the contest for best kite, with his rendition of the Air Force Thunderbird for the 21st century. For his efforts, he won a multi-purpose pliers tool and wallet set.

The afternoon was spent trying to keep the 30-40 mph wind from either ripping apart or driving kites into the trees. To make a long story short, the wind won. Only one kite survived. But everyone had fun while the kites lasted. Steve R. was noted to have his kite up higher than any other, only to have it end up higher in a tree than any other.

Saturday evening we enjoyed two activities - a potluck dinner, in which each patrol fixed one dish (from appetizers to dessert) for supper. The second thing we enjoyed was realizing that we were in the midst of the largest power outage that New Mexico had encountered for many years, and it didn't affect us. In fact, the Troop probably enjoyed the only complete, hot, and on-time dinner that evening. Fortunately, power was restored to central New Mexico within about three hours, and no major problems were reported.

Sunday, Austin D. led the camp in a religious service, down by the river (the Rio Grande).
